Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Hardware Lead, you will play a key part in creating PC Gamer's dedicated hardware coverage, writing and maintaining articles that provide vital buying advice and component analysis for our audience. You will be expected to stay abreast of industry trends in order to create news, how-to, review and opinion content. You may also be asked to appear in video or audio content as required, and commission external freelancers under the guidance of senior colleagues.

Though the team's work primarily appears on pcgamer.com, you will also be expected to deliver contributions to PC Gamer and Maximum PC magazine to an agreed schedule. Additionally, you will attend planning meetings, and liaise with relevant clients and suppliers. You will be expected to edit your colleagues articles as part of our peer-review workflow.

You will respond to reasonable requests from the Global Editor-in-Chief and Brand Director to help create any of the department’s output, including its websites, magazines, video, and social media.

Examples of content you will be responsible for: in-depth component buyer’s guides, reviews of new products, insightful features about hardware trends, and event coverage from shows such as CES and Computex. You will need to remain up to speed with best practice around SEO, implementing it to ensure our guides and other articles rank highly in Google.

We expect you to be a key voice on all matters hardware, bringing a steady stream of fresh editorial ideas to brainstorming sessions. The job requires excellent attention to detail, a commitment to quality, strong organisational skills, a calm approach and self-discipline.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Write and maintain hardware content that makes PC Gamer the #1 destination for players looking to build or upgrade a rig
  • Use SEO optimisation and planning tools to ensure PC Gamer ranks highly for competitive terms and delivers on its ecomm budget target
  • Deliver quality, relevant and well-written copy to deadlines as directed by the Hardware Lead and other senior editorial staff
  • Understand and deliver on the needs of PC Gamer's audience
  • In conjunction with the Hardware Lead, take responsibility for managing your own workload in order to meet all your deadlines
  • Attend meetings with the central ecommerce and audience teams to understand how to best optimize all hardware content, with particular emphasis on buying guides
  • Develop and maintain productive industry, PR and commercial relationships
  • Be responsible for and deliver any administrative tasks set by senior staff
  • Contribute social media to ensure all hardware content is correctly promoted
  • Attend events when required
  • Under the direction of the Brand Director, all editorial staff may be asked to work on any of the creative output of the Group

What do I need to succeed?:

Essential:

  • Excellent knowledge of the PC gaming hardware sector, including contacts at major relevant OEMs (Nvidia, AMD, Intel, Corsair, Razer etc.)
  • Ability to explain complex subjects in a clear and easily understood fashion
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Work on own initiative
  • Ability to deliver content to tight deadlines
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Team player
  • Confident reviewer of PCs and hardware (graphics cards, monitors, SSDs, etc...)

Desirable:

  • Experience of writing clean, informative, entertaining copy about PC gaming hardware for print and online
  • Postgraduate-level journalism qualification
  • Knowledge of libel law
  • Expert knowledge of the hardware market space – vendors, etailers, price points, on a global level, etc.
