Owls in this remote position prototype, develop, and implement game features and tools, from concept to launch, with guidance from task owners

Responsibilities:

  • Create playable prototypes from scratch, independently (create your own passable models, animations, effects, etc. in addition to programming)
  • Develop and test code, fix bugs, and profile; optimize code as directed
  • Quickly and effectively iterate on systems, features, and interactions throughout the course of development at many different levels of quality (from quick and dirty prototypes to fully polished and shippable)
  • Take ownership of tasks and authored systems, ensuring owned systems can be maintained and providing technical and design leadership for owned tasks
  • Collaborate with Project Leads to ensure tasking is meeting milestones, including providing estimates, updates on progress, and notice of potential setbacks
  • Seek and integrate feedback from a variety of stakeholders - including playtests
  • Assist other engineers with their features in a programming capacity or otherwise
  • Follow best practices, development processes, and coding standards

Requirements

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Understanding of gamefeel, affordances, and feedback
  • Ability to quickly turn ideas into reality, at minimum level of effort to evaluate them
  • Ability to see dependencies, cascading affordances, and systems-level ramifications of features
  • Ability to integrate feedback, throw ideas away, and be flexible with multiple iterations

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Unity programming experience

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Developing games solo or near-solo
  • History of experimentation with different tech / tools
  • Rapid prototyping environment experience
  • 3 years Unity programming experience with multiple shipped projects
  • Appreciation of puns (or at least the ability to groan at them)

Physical Requirements:

  • Owls must be able to use virtual reality headsets but are not expected to own one.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a remote full-time, 40-hours per week position. Core hours of work are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Time.

Travel:

For Owls working outside of the Austin, TX area, travel to Austin may be required 4 to 6 times per year. Additionally, we typically encourage owls to attend a conference annually for personal growth and development.
