HEAD COACH – Esports (Part-Time)
Kankakee Community College (KCC) is located on a scenic 177-acre campus 60 miles south of Chicago and provides high quality transfer and career programs, adult education and literacy programs at multiple sites throughout its 1,600-square-mile district. The college enrolls more than 6,000 students annually through credit, and corporate & continuing education programs.
PART-TIME POSITION:
This is a part-time position and is compensated through an annualized stipend of $10,000.
DESCRIPTION:
Under the supervision of the coordinator of Student Life and Development, the eSports Head Coach will be responsible for:
- Providing leadership, coaching, tutoring and management in the creation, growth and maintenance of an eSports team and program;
- Demonstrating a vision for a collegiate varsity eSports program which enhances the academic progress and achievement of students;
- Recruiting qualified students for competitive varsity level teams;
- Leading the KCC eSports teams to compete competitively on behalf of the College;
- Scheduling and coaching intercollegiate matches and tournaments, practice preparation, and in- training labs for team members and walk-ins interested in gaming.
- Securing appropriate sponsorships for eSports at the college.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Teaching/Coaching/Supervision
- Hire, supervise and evaluate eSports student employees and part-time staff.
- Prepare eSports student-athletes for competition, and ensure compliance with National Association of College Esports (NACE), Tespa, Collegiate StarLeague (CSL), Riot Games, Blizzard
- Games as well as other competitions and tournaments at the local, regional and national level.
- Be knowledgeable of collegiate and industry trends, standards and methods in various eSports titles, and be able to advise students on match preparation, post-match analysis, and personal improvement.
- Develop, prepare, administer and evaluate executing fall and spring practice schedules and competition.
- Recruit, instruct, facilitate, teach and coach eSports student-athletes based on industry and varsity e-sports gaming strategies, standards and performance principles.
- Communicate progress and issues related to eSports membership, compliance and sponsorships to the coordinator and other appropriate college officials.
- Conduct industry standard electronic and video analysis and instruction as a teaching and preparation tool.
Sponsorship Acquisition
- Cultivate and secure appropriate sponsorships from local, regional and/or national businesses, organizations and corporations in support of the eSports program.
Technology/Media Management
- Maintain a strong knowledge base of current professional eSports manufacturing standards, including but not limited to: display technology; interactive AV technology; casting & control systems; video conferencing; eSports furniture and equipment; and overall eSports technology.
- Provide oversight for the eSports arena, including the acquisition, evaluation and maintenance of eSports mechanics and equipment.
- Create and maintain a website and all social media components for eSports.
- Create and maintain an inventory for uniforms, supplies and equipment.
- Monitor arena usage for safety concerns and work with IT, facilities and academics in the maintenance of the eSports space.
Recruiting/Retention
- Collaborate with the Enrollment Services department and other appropriate academic and college programs to recruit and enroll qualified eSports students for club sports and varsity level competition teams.
- In cooperation with the Student Success department, monitor academic progress of eSports student-athletes and ensure support for advising and retention of students recruited specifically for the eSports varsity level teams.
- Manage and coordinate recruitment activities that are compliant with college policy and Esports professional association rules, policies and procedures.
- Establish and evaluate industry and collegiate level eligibility standards for eSports, and maintain player records that demonstrate eligibility and overall student success.
Administration
- Create schedules for competitions that are fiscally efficient.
- Manage fiscal operations and ensure departmental finances are aligned with college outcomes.
- Coordinate team travel.
- Serve as the primary spokesperson for the eSports program in the community.
- Represent the College at conferences, regional, state and national meetings relating specifically to eSports.
- Assist in the development and implementation of an assessment plan to measure program outcomes.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- At least 2 years of experience related to eSports coaching, and/or one year of competitive eSports experience at the collegiate level involving multiplayer online video games with team-based elements, or at least 4 years of experience coaching and/or competing at the high school or club level.
- Working knowledge of or willingness to learn all applicable National Associate of ESports (NACE) rules, as well as rules related to Tespa and Collegiate StarLeague (CSL).
- Knowledge and experience of ESports games such as League of Legends, DOTA, Overwatch,
Hearthstone and/or games within the genre of LoL, MOBA, FPS, and RTS. - Ability to operate computer equipment in eSports Lab/Arena including knowledge of gaming platforms and supporting websites.
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment for optimal gaming experience.
- Must have a valid Illinois Driver's license and an "Acceptable" driving record per the Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) guidelines.
- Must meet travel expectations as required for the position.
- Able to lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds and/or operate office equipment for pulling, pushing, moving and storage.
- Self-motivation skills and ability to work with little supervision required.
- Experience recruiting high school or college students preferred.
- Good interpersonal communication skills highly desirable.
- Good communication and motivational skills required.
- Qualified candidate must be literate in reading, writing, and computation skills as well as possess the dedication and leadership skills required for the position.
