Though most well-known for stop motion feature films, Aardman has been making games for around 14 years, and moved into console gaming for the first time in 2018 with the co-production 11-11: Memories Retold, published by Bandai Namco. Since then, Aardman have been working on a brand new gaming IP for a multi-national publisher, filled with all the character, humour, love and craft you would expect from an Aardman film. Based in Bristol in the South West, Aardman work from a custom built HQ building with an on-site 40 seat cinema amongst other perks, as well as another base which houses the stop motion feature production. Founded in 1976, Aardman has become one of the UK’s biggest names in storytelling, and sees games and interactive as the future of telling really exciting, interesting, and characterful stories for years to come.

The Role

The Junior VFX/TA trainee will work with the art and programming teams to build tools and create systems to improve the look of the game, and create technical FX.

This role will gain experience across various technical art areas. This will include periods of time spent doing:

  • Tooling: Where in the pipeline can we see to create efficiencies, or improve player experience or developer quality of life by building efficient tools?
  • Technical art: How can we create amazing assets for the game in an efficient way? How can we ensure we can have lots of these assets on screen and the game is still performant?
  • VFX: How can we utilise particle systems and other tools to create impressive FX for things like smoke, fire, weather, etc.

This traineeship should give the person skills and experience across all areas of technical art, especially in creating FX. They will also learn what it means to work within a games team: communication, task management, how to estimate and much more.

The ideal candidate will have experience with game engines and the experience or desire to learn FX.
