The Role

Firewalk Studios is looking for a Lead UI Engineer who is interested in applying their skills to help bring exceptional entertainment to millions of players. As our Lead UI Engineer, you will be responsible for working cross-functionally with artists, designers and other engineers on process and implementation of UI systems and features.

What your day might look like

  • Working with your team, UI Design and directors to understand the overall needs of UI for the game

  • Helping to break down high-level technical requirements into specific tasks and dependencies

  • Collaborating with other teams like gameplay, design, and backend services to work through UI needs and technical approach for features and systems

  • Conducting research and determining the most performant but also flexible solutions to enable rapid design iteration

  • Performing code reviews and working with your engineering team to align on UI architecture and coding standards

  • Working with UI Artists and Technical Artists to help implement key UI features

  • Participating in playtests to see how the UI is working in context and giving holistic notes on the game

  • Mentoring and guiding members of the UI engineering team to achieve their career goals

Qualifications

  • You have been a UI Engineering Lead on at least 1 shipped title, helping the team from early production to ship, using Unreal Engine 4/5 (with UMG and Slate)

  • You have a body of work that showcases your ability to create performant, robust UI systems.

  • You have a solid foundation working closely with UI/UX and Game Design discipline leads to formalize, disseminate knowledge, and implement sophisticated UI features.

  • You can own and assist in the ideation and implementation of the UI facing elements of large scale game systems.

  • You have had experience leading a team of 2 or more engineers, guiding them through complex technical decisions, and nurturing their career aspirations and interests.

  • You have experience integrating backend services with player-facing features that require complex UI interactions.

  • You are able to bring your own shipping experience to the project and educate the team about challenges and pitfalls you’ve overcome when shipping titles.

  • You have experience in modeling extendible and flexible UI for multiplayer games that are updated frequently in live environments.

  • You have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

$149,600—$224,400 USD
