The Challenge Ahead

Criterion Games is looking for a QA professional with extensive experience and passion for art to join our team as the QA Lead for Art. Reporting to the QA Project Manager, you will be the key point of contact between QA and the art and content teams providing clear actionable qualitative and quantitative assessment to ensure visual targets are being met and improve the overall quality of the game.

What a QA Lead (Art) does at Criterion

QA Leads, or Quality Designers as they are referred to internally, are the most senior members of the analyst family and are equivalent in seniority to Project Leads. Instead of leading people, Quality Designers are focused on owning significant game feature areas or systems. They are champions of best practice and new ideas in testing, playing a vital role in driving our craft forward. They define and evolve testing procedures and ensure accurate execution and reporting of all testing activities by the wider QA team for their area(s) of ownership.

What you will do:

  • QA owner for the internal and external art and content production and integration process.
  • Work closely with game artists, animators, designers and others to ensure high standards of content quality are maintained.
  • Define and maintain the test strategy for supporting art and content production, ensuring accurate reporting of status and risk.
  • Align with internal and external development partners to establish processes to fully realize and support both the creation, polish and release of world art, customization assets, vehicles and characters.
  • Represent QA within the development team; be visible, vocal and integrated.
  • Participate in daily development stand-ups and share updates with the wider QA team.
  • Develop and maintain an intimate understanding of the art production and integration workflows and their associated requirements; proactively share details and updates with the wider QA team.
  • Perform pre-integration testing reviews to ensure content meets specifications and quality targets.
  • Work with our remote test team to ensure high-quality service delivery for your area(s) of ownership.
  • Use development tools to guide issue identification upstream and promote defect prevention.
  • Identify high value automation and telemetry requirements to help improve the art and content testing process.
  • Interpret data from numerous sources to produce clear, relevant information, informing decisions to improve product quality and QA service delivery
  • Provide Qualitative feedback in order to improve overall product quality and the overall perception of the art, content and features used in our games.
  • Work with partners across the business to ensure alignment.
  • Identify and champion opportunities to define and improve processes.

What you will have:

  • A passion for quality.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent industry experience.
  • Previous extensive game development QA experience across multiple titles.
  • Knowledge of gaming consoles and their systems.
  • Experience in peer coaching and mentoring.
  • Experience with 3D content creation and texturing tools such as Maya, 3ds Max, Photoshop
  • General knowledge of common production techniques including; high-low poly baking, modular asset creation, whiteboxing, physically based rendering and sculpting.
  • Understanding of the technical rights and wrongs of asset creation and scene layout, displaying good technical knowledge, caring about keeping our game running smoothly on console.

Also desirable:

  • Traditional art skills, appreciation of composition, lighting, colour and detail.
  • Experience with applications such as JIRA, Confluence, DevTest, TestRail, Perforce or Git.
  • Experience with data analysis and visualisation tools, such as Power Bi or Tableau.
  • Experience with game engine editors, such as Frostbite, Unreal Engine, or Unity.
  • Experience working with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban).
