NASEF Overview

The North America Scholastic Esports League is a one of a kind national esports “learn and play” platform whose mission is “to ensure that ALL students possess the knowledge and skills needed to be society’s game changers: educated, productive and empathetic individuals” through online gaming and esports. NASEF offers the only fully approved State of California curriculum and workshop programming that connects the playing of esports and STEM education.

Connected Camps - Virtual Position

Connected Camps, a member of the NASEF leadership team, is seeking esports coaches for the North America Scholastic Esports Federation (NASEF). The game: Overwatch. The goal: To nurture a healthy and competitive environment that empowers high school gamers. Coaches will typically work with two school teams weekly during the league’s spring season, which runs from late 2018 through end of season approximately March 2019. Coaching will take place virtually, and include team sessions, clinics, scrims, and tournament play.

High Schools will provide an in-person faculty sponsor for each school, known as a General Manager (GM). Coaches work closely with their teams’ GMs and their coach mentor to create an effective training program emphasizing teamwork, communication, sportsmanship, conflict resolution, and strategy. Coaches will ensure that teams feel well supported, informed, and prepared for league participation.

The position begins in the September of 2019, exact date to be determined, and concludes at the end of the regular season in December 2019.

Qualifications

  • Diamond Rank (preferred not required)
  • Experience in Overwatch tournaments, leagues or clubs
  • A quiet workspace with reliable internet, microphone and webcam
  • Experience working with high school and/or middle school students
  • Experience coaching and being coached or experience mentoring and being mentored. We will want to know about your team building experience.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

  • A degree in Business, Education, Child Development, Psychology, or relevant degree that can be applied to coaching a team.
  • Experience working in high-pressure scenarios or situations that involve confrontation and solving those issues.

All Coaches Should…

  • Enjoy working with young people. Have a positive attitude towards working in work in a partnership with the school’s General Manager and other stakeholders.
  • Have a positive attitude for conflict management and resolution.
  • Like presenting, leading discussions, listening, and asking questions.
  • Be organized, able to work independently and remotely, keep a punctual schedule.
  • Have excellent verbal and communication skills.
  • Be comfortable in voice and video chat.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership over the experience of two or more high school teams.
  • Be a good representative of Connected Camps and the NASEF.
  • Work closely with Connected Camps staff and General Managers (GM: team’s faculty sponsor) to enable athletes to reach their full potential as productive LOL team members.
  • Ensure inviting and friendly atmosphere for all community members.
  • Create an environment for the players to act as a team.
  • Deliver improving performance results for your team.

Duties

  • Train competitive teams and casual teams within clubs for league competition.
  • Reinforce and model league values/pillars and club charter.
  • Assist GM in the selection of players for the competitive team.
  • Manage scrimmage schedule for team.
  • Communicating training and scrimmage schedule with GM.
  • Understand all league rules and regulations, and assure compliance and consistency among athletes.
  • Support players in creating and tracking individual and team goals.
  • Provide high quality feedback and mentorship to the team.
  • Develop an inclusive culture of constructive reflective practice with the team.
  • Support teams in dealing with conflict in a positive and constructive way.
  • Serve as an ambassador and advocate for the league.
  • Participate in media production for the league.
