Job Title: Performance Coach

Part Time (25 hours a week)

NASEF Overview

The North America Scholastic Esports League is a one of a kind national esports “learn and play” platform whose mission is “to ensure that ALL students possess the knowledge and skills needed to be society’s game changers: educated, productive and empathetic individuals” through online gaming and esports. NASEF offers the only fully approved State of California curriculum and workshop programming that connects the playing of esports and STEM education.

Connected Camps

Connected Camps, a member of the NASEF leadership team, is seeking esports coaches for the North America Scholastic Esports Federation (NASEF). The goal: To nurture a healthy and competitive environment that empowers high school gamers. Coaches will typically work with two school teams weekly during the league’s Fall and Spring seasons. Coaching takes place virtually, and includes team sessions, clinics, scrims, and tournament play. This upcoming season we will be coaching Overwatch.

Schools will provide an in-person faculty sponsor for each school, known as a General Manager (GM). Coaches work closely with their teams’ GMs and their coach mentor to create an effective training program emphasizing teamwork, communication, sportsmanship, conflict resolution, and strategy. Coaches will ensure that teams feel well supported, informed, and prepared for league participation.

Job Summary

The Performance Coach supports the Esports Coaching program’s activities and projects, and provides administrative and logistical support to the Esports Program Manager in the implementation and development of the program.

Essential Job Functions

  • Manage Coach and team schedules, including program sessions, matches, and special events
  • Support Program Manager in building Coaching resources, including handbooks, trainings and toolkits
  • Conduct workshops and clinics for Coach development
  • Report and input biweekly timesheets
  • Support the hiring process of Coaches and Clinicians
  • Manage and moderate relevant program Discord servers
  • Participate in ongoing development and strategic planning of program model
  • Participate in NASEF and Connected Camps team meetings
  • Organize and create other program content, including blog posts, surveys, session videos, and social media
  • Facilitate community meetings
  • Plan and execute internal community events, including show matches, scrims, and game nights
  • Liaise between Esports Program Manager and NASEF General Managers, maintaining clear and positive communication

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent

Preferred Education

Psychology, Sociology, Sports Performance, Computer Science

Required Experience

A total of 1 to 3 years of experience in the following fields:

  • Experience in a professional esports environment
  • Experience in a role providing administrative program support

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in online communications and content creation
  • Experience working in a distributed team
  • Knowledge of Overwatch, League of Legends, Fortnite, Smash, and Rocket League

Other Required Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills: verbal, written, technological, and interpersonal
  • Passion for and knowledge of esports and online gaming
  • Ability to operate a computer, including familiarity with Google Suite, Slack, Discord, and Zoom
  • Other Preferred Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a self-directed manner from a home office, using online collaboration tools in a distributed work team
  • Interest in working in a fast-paced, iterative, design-based environment with a focus on young people
  • Ability and desire to submit work to team early for constructive criticism and revision, as well as ability to give constructive criticism for revision
  • Ability to research and synthesize information quickly
  • Detail-oriented and able to manage personal workflow on multiple tasks and deliverables
  • Flexible, independent and willing to pitch-in where needed

Location and Travel

This position is mostly remote, with the exception of periodic in-person team meetings in Los Angeles and Orange County. This position must be able to fulfill these local travel requirements.
