Lead Content Designer, World of Warcraft

Job Description

This role is responsible for helping to maintain and execute a vision of World of Warcraft outdoor replayability systems and beloved side content like holidays, events, heritage armor, and futures variants thereof. There will be a focus on iterating on existing systems like world quests, Threads of Fate, bonus objectives, etc. but an equal or greater emphasis on finding new and interesting ways to keep the zones fresh. This role requires a strong understanding of what works well and is comfortable for players so that we can use this as a strong base to try new ways to mix it up for players. This lead will work with the Lead Game Design Group to maintain a healthy team culture. They will work to maintain strong partnerships with rewards, encounters, art, level design, gameplay engineering, tools, UI, etc., and actively look for opportunities to make the game better than the sum of its parts. They will champion Blizzard’s design values and keep the content fantasy and gameplay focused as best fits the needs of each release. They will work with Design Management to shepherd the careers and level progression of their people by giving direct but supportive feedback with consistent follow-up.

In Practical Terms, This Means Their Responsibilities Would Be

  • Works with the Lead Game Design Group on establishing the broad goals for each release.
  • Works with the Lead Game Design Group on defining what works well, needs updating, or are missed opportunities on the current live release each cycle.
  • Foster a team culture of prototyping, iteration, and playtesting.
  • Consistently gather and maintain a list of new ideas to improve replayability with a focus on outdoor zone gameplay
  • Provides mentoring and feedback to their team
  • Co-ordinates the onboarding and training of new designers.
  • Works with department manager on career development goals for designers and partners with the department manager on performance reviews.
  • Works with tools team to help prioritize tool requests from the Content Team

Requirements

  • Experience playing World of Warcraft, and a deep understanding of its history and characters.
  • Experience managing and/or mentoring others.
  • Extensive content creation experience.
  • Strong writing and character development skills.
  • Able to work creatively and meet deadlines in a demanding team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Absolute passion for playing and making computer games.

Pluses

  • 6 years or more of game design experience, preferably on MMO/RPG content.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive experience with Warcraft III and the extended Warcraft universe.
