As the Engineering Manager of the Commerce initiative, you will be part of Riot's Player Platform. Your leadership will help Commerce engineering teams to build reliable RESTful services which are part of the platform to enables Riot to launch games reliably. That means building, scaling and operating essential systems and services. Failure of these “foundational” systems mean that service failures impact downstream systems.

Within the Commerce initiative there are three main systems: Content Access Platform (CAP), Payments B2B (Riot Access), and Payments B2C (Riot Pay).

  • CAP provides game entitlements services - which provide players access to content.
  • Payments - Business to Business - provides business the ability to grant access to content.
  • Payments - Business to Consumer systems help players to pay for goods and services.

All of these commerce components are systems which game teams need to run a successful games. Our goal is to provide these services to allow game titles to be rolled out more reliably, more quickly and at lower cost levels than ever before.

You will report to the Initiative Engineering Leader of Player Platform, and run these platforms for some of our largest existing games such as League of Legends, while expanding the platform to launch new games. You will improve the success of future games operations through assembling the team, defining the operations processes, managing the team, and facilitating the integration with Riot's operations and game lifecycle processes. And you will improve the art of operational excellence by ensuring safe deployment and operating principles. This means you will not only oversee the services development, but it’s operation, scalability and metrics.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a group of software engineers, engineering managers and coach them in their personal development
  • Partner with discipline, product, and leadership to implement strategies for improving team health and effectiveness, and develop healthy relationships with other teams at Riot.
  • Champion hygienic world-wide development best practices meant to maximize availability, constrain failures, and improve failure responses.
  • Increase team effectiveness, while delivering player value and keeping tech-debt low.
  • Advocate for delivering and maintaining the technical foundation and health of the product through essential Indicators - availability, latency distributions, cost and other customer-oriented metrics.
  • Develop processes and methodologies to improve the effectiveness of cross-team collaboration across groups.
  • Form relationships with the Live Operations team to understand our player pain around operational quality.
  • Forecast, measure, and achieve improvements to the operational quality, cost and usage of commerce systems for our players and developers.

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of leading software development teams/operations of growing scope (20-40+ direct reports)
  • Experience leading and growing technical managers.
  • Experience setting technical strategy on a company/global scale
  • Building motivated teams and leaders, performance management, and mentorship
  • Experience at a senior individual contributor level as an Engineer or Architect
  • Advanced Computer Science degree or equivalent experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience high-scale hiring or assisting talent management on teams of multiple disciplines/job families (such as development, operations, testing, and product management)
  • Expertise around designing and/or implementing system health, performance monitoring tools, and software management tools for 24x7 environments
  • Familiar with the challenges surrounding efficient operations and failure mode analysis in large complex distributed systems
