Staff Designer, Design Systems

San Francisco, CA

Our Design Systems team is a key pillar of design execution at PlayStation. The group works horizontally across all PlayStation consumer products and platforms to provide product design teams with the component libraries and design documentation needed to create product specifications that are ready for prototyping and engineering. They encourage consistency across our product areas while also allowing for innovation and creativity to push the system forward. They have a mastery of our design tools and tame the many projects in flight by evangelizing consistent process and structure.

You are an experienced design system practitioner, familiar with the challenges of scaling systems across multiple products, platforms, cultures, and disciplines. You are an extremely proficient design thinker, with strong experience solving big problems while understanding even small changes can sometimes have the biggest impacts. You see the big picture but really sweat the details. You’re not an engineer but you have a general understanding of typical front-end technologies.

What you’ll do

  • Help manage the architecture of PlayStation’s design systems, visual language, and tokens system with a focus on clarity, performance, high craft and ease-of-use

  • Be a subject-matter expert in design and accessibility best practices to support Design and Engineering partners

  • Navigate and organize complex and often ambiguous problem spaces

  • Collaborate closely with product designers and engineers to understand system needs, dependencies, and priorities

  • Heavily influence overall design system strategy and roadmap

  • Uphold and inspire a high level of design execution throughout the team

  • Mentor senior and junior team members

  • Be a champion for inclusive design and accessibility

What we’re looking for

  • Strong portfolio that demonstrates outstanding multi-platform design system experience (visual design a plus) and product thinking informed by qualitative and quantitative insights

  • Organized and structured work management habits, and processes that create clarity and consistency

  • Great communication and storytelling skills with the ability to clearly articulate design decisions and rationale

  • Experience collaborating with Product Management and Engineering counterparts

  • Insatiable curiosity and a habit of challenging assumptions

  • High level of self-awareness with a growth mindset

  • Someone who values listening and facilitating as much as talking and doing

  • Experience seeing the big picture and the ambiguity that often comes with it

  • An understanding of front-end technologies like HTML, CSS+flexbox, and JavaScript+React is a huge plus

  • Experience working with decentralized or global teams is a plus

  • Experience crafting for a global audience in many languages is a plus

  • Experience with consumer gaming or media products is a plus
