Job Description

As a Game Economic Designer, your responsibility is to understand how a game works as a service for its customers and how the customers behave in it, identifying and developing the purchase drivers in the game economy context, and providing constant data-driven recommendation on design, tuning and pricing in order to improve game financial performance.

To do this, pre-release, you’re able to design the virtual products a game will offer, define metrics that allow you to individually measure their impact in a given title, and work closely with the development team to see those design refined and metrics implemented.

Once the game is launched, you’re able to analyze the collected data and report which are the performing/underperforming aspects of the game economic model, why, and provide solutions to Gameloft management.

Project Management

  • Defining the virtual products and their statistics with the development team, and understanding how each of them contributes to the game dynamics.
  • Identifying the potential sale drivers for the different product categories in the game economy, defining the key points of exposure for those drivers.
  • Work closely with the design team to optimize existing design for free to play mechanics
  • Work closely with the development team to see those designs refined and metrics implemented
  • Balancing the needs for those virtual products, their relation, life cycle, and their streams of availability.
  • Managing pricing as to create specific price point roles, implement selling strategies for higher price points.
  • Regularly provide user feedback and stat/price point tuning to development team based on play testing, during both game development and post-release.
  • Analyze the evolution of the metrics you defined to spot both monetization bottlenecks and facilitators, then report suggestions for the game design or strategy accordingly.
  • Keeping abreast of game design technology and techniques, industry trends, or audience interests, reactions, and needs by participating in educational programs, attending meetings or workshops, or participating in professional organizations or conferences;
  • Determining supplementary “virtual features”, such as currency, shop items, menu design, and audio direction.
  • Defining Meta, Monetization and Retention strategies of the games;
  • Conducting regular Design reviews throughout the game development process;
  • In some situations, under the delegation of Studio Lead Game Designer, taking part in task assignment, project follow-up and coordination to ensure the smooth implementation of all projects and deadline commitment in the Division;
  • Checking, assigning and possibly fixing the bugs related to Game Economy Design or feedbacks from others stakeholders;

Support to coach, mentor, train, organize to build a solid GD team

  • Providing training, guidance, and necessary support to ensure the integration and job delivery of the assigned Game Economy Designers;
  • Mentoring Game designers and other assigned members by providing them feedbacks and giving them the support regarding game economy design features;
  • Making sure all documents, game economy features sent to Top Management and external stakeholders are well-structured and highly qualified to minimize feedbacks and gain trust;
  • Making sure all prototypes/projects in the division will fully follow up with the core pillars;
  • Supporting Studio Lead Game Designer to:
  • Make training materials to improve the team members’ skills and to drive them to the best commitment, work quality and performance;

Reporting:

  • Reporting to Studio Lead Game Designer and Producer.

Qualifications

Skills & Experience:

  • About 03 to 05 years of experience in a Game Designer role;
  • Strong sensitivity to gameplay and game design, understanding how to build needs and emotions in the context of a game.
  • Strong analytical and formal thinking, able to break problems down in their key variables and identify the relations between them.
  • Strong econometrics skills, able to model problems into quantitative systems, and draw qualitative conclusions out of quantitative data.
  • Statistic knowledge, able to formulate ratios and indexes specific to each game, identifying specific weaknesses and strengths in its economy design.
  • Mastery of Excel.
  • Advanced understanding of SQL.
  • Deep, up-to-date knowledge of the free-to-play market, both web-based and on smartphones.
  • Strong marketing knowledge, able to formulate adequate selling strategies to improve the financial performance.
  • Understanding of client/server architecture and data collecting pipeline and mining
  • Strong passion and solid video games background – knowledge about new market trends but also about retro gaming;
  • Solid knowledge about Game Design including game mechanics, and UI/UX;
  • Great knowledge about Business models, monetization psychology and monetization strategy;
  • Good organization skill.

Pluses:

  • Previous experience in econometrics/data mining
  • Mastering of UI prototyping tools such as Flash
  • Experience in community managing, marketing or product manager
  • Previous experience as game designer, social designer or gambling designer
