Job Description

Bit Fry Game Studios seeks an artist to create materials and lighting that blows players away. We assess player experience in the hierarchy of computer-generated art thusly:

  • A Great Model + Great Materials + Bad Lighting = What am I looking at?
  • A Great Model + Bad Materials + Great Lighting = I can see that this is bad.
  • A Bad Model + Great Materials + Great Lighting = That ‘thing’ looks great!
  • A Great Model + Great Materials + Great Lighting = I am moved by the greatness of what I am witnessing!

The artist we are looking for is a recognized expert in their field. They bring the efforts of the Concept Art, 3D Modeling, and Technical Art teams together by creating excellent material surfaces and lighting rigs to present memorable, breathtaking scenes. Additionally, this artist understands the importance of character lighting, maintaining visual clarity, and readability in action-packed scenes.

Responsibilities

  • Create PBR materials for Character and Environment Assets for use in-game as well as pre-rendered cinematics and marketing assets
  • Produce benchmark materials using Substance Designer
  • Oversee and develop material library
  • Create high quality textures/materials
  • Assist in designing, implementing and maintaining material pipelines
  • Collaborate with environment artists at partner studios to maintain consistent process and visual quality
  • Anticipate and identify production challenges to leads and Technical Directors
  • Research new texture tools and techniques to create more efficient and visually appealing environments
  • Work with technical artist to develop advanced shader and material sets
  • Able to take initial direction and color keys and use interpretive judgment to light gameplay spaces to a high degree of polish and playability

Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of working within an HDR pipeline and tasteful balancing of post process screen effects
  • Mastery of a wide range of game lighting techniques (vertex baking, lightmaps, light probes, dynamic, etc.)
  • Mastery of node-based material systems (the Unreal Engine material editor, Substance designer, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of color theory and practical lighting concepts
  • Excellent technical and artistic problem-solving skills
  • Efficient organization and communication skills and ability to prioritize and execute ideas within a schedule
  • An amazing portfolio demonstrating your ability to create PBR Materials, and light them correctly in a wide variety of lighting conditions
  • Detailed explanations of each piece in your portfolio, specifically citing your specific contributions, and crediting other artists whose contributions appear in your environments
  • Portfolios without proper attributions will not be considered
