Supercell confirms development of seven new games

Finnish mobile game developer Supercell has revealed its plans for the future in a new blog post, including the development of seven — yes, seven — new games.

The state of play: Before looking to the future of Supercell, it's worth revisiting how it's performed to date.

  • Having launched in 2010, the Finnish developer currently has five published games including Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, and Brawl Stars.
  • Supercell's first game, Hay Day, is reported to have generated in-app revenue of $963M as of December 2021. Its biggest game, Clash of Clans, has generated almost $4.6B in in-app revenue since its launch in August 2012.
  • Supercell has a workforce of roughly 340 people. Compare this to major games developers like Ubisoft, which had over 18,000 employees in 2021, to see how small — perhaps streamlined? — the Finnish company actually is despite the amount of money flowing in.

Looking ahead: Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen has written to players and fans, revealing the company's ethos and plans moving forward.

  • Despite having amassed more than 5B downloads and 250M players per month across all five games, Paananen stated that the games have "not really grown that much in the past few years." He believes the company had "been so stuck in some of [its] old beliefs" and needed to be reinvigorated.
  • Equipped with an "improved mindset," Supercell is planning to open a studio in North America, stop prioritizing having "small teams," and iterate on three games it currently has in beta with player satisfaction in mind. Overall, it has seven new games in various stages of development but the bar is "very, very high" so there are no guarantees any will see the light of day publicly.
  • Developing seven new games requires a lot of staff and resources. Publishing new games, and keeping them fresh and functional once live, will require even more personnel — Supercell is hiring for 13 roles at the time of publication and, with a new studio and potential new game releases, many more opportunities are to come.
