The rules engine team implements game mechanics and game-flow features for Magic: The Gathering Arena. We collaborate frequently with game designers and front-end developers to deliver a snappy and engaging digital experience, but with all the strategy of authentic Magic.
What You’ll Do:
- Understand the arcane interactions of a tenured game system with an ever-growing number of unique game pieces, and deconstruct those pieces and interactions into a series of well-defined implementation tasks.
- Work in multiple programming languages (Python, C#, C++, CLIPS) to bring a card from its English text to generated code run by our servers.
- Rapidly grow the scope of our natural language parser to understand new card text, enhance the game rules engine to handle new rules and mechanics, and proactively shape the long-term technical direction of those systems.
- Collaborate with game designers to ensure that upcoming content is achievable and UX designers to craft a polished digital play experience.
- Improve the team through code review, collaboration on technical designs, mentorship of fellow engineers, the proliferation of esoteric knowledge, and the enhancement of development tooling.
- Adopt metrics which inform the performance and stability of the game rules engine.
- Support the live product and resolve issues as they arise in production environments.

- Ability to coordinate large technical initiatives, preferably in object-oriented languages, and expertise with software engineering methodologies.
