The Husky Union Building (HUB) is a department within the Division of Student Life. The HUB has an outstanding opportunity for an Esports Manager. UW Esports’ foundational pillars are community, career, and competition and anchored by the HUB Esports Arena & Gaming Lounge: A 1,000 square-foot full-service gaming center supporting casual and competitive gaming and virtual reality. The space serves as the nerve center and nexus between student communities, interactive media partners, and gaming culture.

The Esports Manager is responsible for all aspects of the UW Esports program, representing the institution as the primary spokesperson for competitive esports. This position is charged with implementing the program’s foundational pillars through a student-centered approach, with an emphasis on building a healthy and inclusive gaming community.

Promising candidates will possess a passion for higher education and student development, can communicate technical subjects to non-technical staff, perform at the highest level of integrity, and have a proven track record as a successful professional.

This position reports to the Associate Director for Communications & Development and interacts regularly with department staff and campus colleagues on initiatives related to esports and gaming.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following represents a variety of the responsibilities assigned to the person in this position. The examples represent typical work, but are not intended to be inclusive of all duties required for this position.

Program Oversight

  • Oversee all aspects of the UW Esports program including teams’ management, outreach, and broadcast
  • Serve as the primary contact and spokesperson for competitive esports at UW; represent the program, department, and institution at events, conferences, and online; maintain membership and participation in esports and gaming associations and leagues
  • Work collaboratively with the HUB Games Manager to support programming in the Esports Arena and Gaming Lounge
  • Work with the Student Activities Office to support gaming-related Registered
  • Student Organizations (RSOs)
  • Develop and implement UW Esports policies and procedures, including codes of conduct with an emphasis on equity, inclusion, and healthy gaming
  • Develop and manage programs and events supporting community and career development; collaborate with campus partners such as Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), the Career & Internship Center, and academic units
  • Develop and manage esports and broadcasting summer camp programs in collaboration with UW Youth & Teen Programs
  • Participate in department staff meetings, standing committees, and work groups
  • Develop and monitor annual operating budget
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Student Development

  • Hire, train, and supervise student employees and volunteers to support the UW Esports program; provide support for students to develop practical and transferable skills within the HUB’s learning competencies of communication, critical thinking/problem solving, personal responsibility, and leadership
  • Support the retention and persistence of student employees, volunteers, and players through social counseling and referrals to campus resources
  • Participate in HUB Student Staff Development standing committee

Partnerships, Collaborations, and Strategic Planning

  • Actively collaborate with campus partners and participate in campus-wide communities of practice, including the UW Esports Advisory Board and the UW Gaming Coalition
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director for Communications and Development to cultivate and maintain corporate and private sponsorship/donors; develop and implement strategies to actively engage alumni
  • Develop and maintain relationships with industry partners, with an emphasis on the Puget Sound region
  • Oversee program assessment, proactively identifying areas for improvement; perform continuous research on new and emerging trends in collegiate esports and gaming

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and 2+ years’ experience in esports/gaming, interactive media, sports management, recreation, or related field
  • Thorough knowledge of esports and competitive gaming, specifically collegiate
  • Proven ability to supervise student employees and volunteers
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills including outstanding customer service experience
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems, design creative solutions, and apply critical thinking; ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies; flexibility
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and work well under pressure
  • Variable work hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with higher education and student development, specifically supervising, advising, and/or mentoring students
  • Experience with collegiate esports
  • Management and/or coaching within an esports organization
  • Knowledge of LAN center management
