Director of Esports Program

APPOINTMENT: Administrative, full-time, Twelve (12) months

Definition of Classification:

Responsible for all aspects of the creation, implementation, and management of all phases of a competitive and successful collegiate Esports program including recruitment of student athletes, team scheduling and programming, public relations, academic support, and the retention of student athletes. This position will supervise student employees and interns.

The Esports Director will recruit and coach an Esports team to develop meta-based strategies, analyze competitive opportunities, develop strong internal communication, grow player morale, provide personal mentoring, and ensure the success of the team in tournaments. In addition to a varsity team, the Esports Director will provide support to and opportunities for club teams and recreational players to engage and compete. The Program Director will work significantly with the student-athletes, admissions and financial aid staff, administration, faculty, community members, and other colleges and universities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assume a lead role in the establishment of a competitive collegiate Esports team at the University of Redlands, to include the design and development of a gaming space on campus in collaboration with Facilities Management, Information Technology Services, Vendors, and others as appropriate.
  • Develop an outreach and recruitment plan for potential athletes to attend University of Redlands in collaboration with the Offices of Admissions and Student Financial Service, as needed.
  • Conduct coaching and instruction activities during training, practice, and competition.
  • Promote, as well as monitor, the physical, emotional, and social welfare of student- athletes, as well as their academic performance and persistence. Manage the team travel needs and competition schedule, including practice and off-season.
  • Organize and manage camps, clinics, and promotional events
  • Demonstrate excellent political acumen demonstrated by the ability to successfully navigate complex networks of relationships and to work with a high level of cultural competence and sensitivity.
  • Identify and secure funding sources (corporate sponsorships, donations and scholarships) to support the student athlete experience, as well as the experiences of intramural gaming participants, as appropriate. Ensure team compliance with all league, conference, and institutional rules and regulations.
  • Continuously ensure personal behavior and program reputation are in alignment with institution values and mission.
  • Drive engagement across the University community by providing opportunities for gaming and utilization of the facility, via partnerships with academic programs, club and recreational programs, informal student involvement, and spectator.
  • Develop an annual line-item budget and closely monitor the allocation and expenditures of funds to maintain a balanced budget. Engage in fundraising and sponsorship opportunities. Administer and coordinate all equipment and uniform purchases within budgetary limitations. Maintain a complete inventory of all equipment and uniforms pertaining to the sport. Ensure that all financial requests are handled according to department and University.
  • The incumbent is required to maintain contact with the campus outside of normal working hours on a regular basis except during authorized vacation.
  • Develop and implement policy around all aspects of the Esports programming including but not limited to the usage of space and technology, winning distributions, and eligibility requirements to participate.
  • Strategic Planning: Enlisting partners in ongoing strategic planning and analysis, setting measurable and concrete goals with ongoing assessment and refinement of goals, annual reports.
  • Administration: Prepare game plans from personal scouting reports. Attend campus- wide meetings, departmental staff meetings, clinics, workshops, etc.,.
  • Mentorship: Monitor and promote student-athlete academic progress and success. Academic monitoring of student athletes. Work with campus partners to provide a holistic approach to the development of the student-athletes.
  • Communication: Communications with student-athletes, their families, and concerned third parties within the boundaries of confidentiality. Communicate effectively and efficiently to inform others about the development, successes, and challenges of the program.
  • Other Duties: Perform other duties not specifically stated herein but deemed essential to the operations of the program, department, and/or division.

Qualification Guidelines

Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

Experience/Training/Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, sports management, business, or a related field required; relevant Master's degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years of successful coaching experience, preferably at the collegiate level with head coaching experience highly preferred.
  • Experience involving multiplayer online video games with team-based elements and expert knowledge of League of Legends, Overwatch, or similar games.
  • A valid California Class C CA drivers' license with a good driving record is A current DMV printout demonstrating a good driving record will be required prior to offer of employment.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of applicable Esports Association(s), as well as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), to which the University of Redlands adheres, and avoids any and all violations of these rules and standards.
  • Supervisory principles.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to all applicable conference, department and college regulations that relate to recruiting, daily program management,operation of the individual sport and general success of the program.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

Working Conditions:

Work environment includes office and other settings as appropriate. The noise level in the work area is typical of most office environments with telephones, personal interruptions, and background noises. Frequent travel is required. Working hours may vary and occasional evening and weekend work is required.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects, be ambulatory around campus and buildings. There is a frequent need for oral, written and auditory communication. The position requires mobility including having the ability to move materials on a regular basis such as files, books, office equipment, etc. and travel between buildings on campus. Manual dexterity and coordination are required to operate equipment such as gaming equipment, computer keyboard, calculator, and standard office equipment. Occasional need for travel. Frequently use wrist, hands and/or fingers to make small repetitive movements. Required to lift packages and/or move heavy objects, 50+lbs.
