The opportunity

Unity Labs’ “Slices” Team researches and develops experimental user-experiences, with a focus on augmented, mixed, and virtual reality. We push the boundaries of traditional UX concepts in XR, delivering innovative solutions to challenges that XR developers are meeting today, and will encounter in new forms tomorrow. Our work was recently presented in the form of the “Unity Slices” project, at the 2021 Meta Connect conference. We're seeking a senior technical artist that wants to join us in developing Unity Slices, and the future of XR!

You will guide all related matters in a small cross-discipline team, with a long history of development experience in XR. Our team thrives upon an intuitive and fluid exchange of ideas, inclusive of all perspectives. You will have a demonstrated ability to maintain artistic quality, while working within the narrow technical constraints of current XR hardware. You will assist in creating & optimizing assets, while developing artist-friendly tools and workflows in Unity. Through research, development, and iteration, we will set new standards in XR experiences that will inspire the industry!

What you’ll be doing

  • Work alongside artists, designers, and engineers to build performant content of outstanding quality
  • Create new 2D & 3D content, and optimize existing content
  • Develop artist-facing tools for Unity (including custom editor inspectors)
  • Manage internal and external content development efforts
  • Define content development processes & requirements that will drive the development of new Slices-related content created by external developers

What we’re looking for

  • Extensive experience with multiple DCC tools, & familiarity with industry standard formats (FBX, BLEND, GLTF, USD, etc)
  • Experience using procedural generation tools such as Houdini, Blender, and Substance
  • Demonstrated capability in writing tools and pipelines using relevant scripting languages (C#, Python, Max/MELScript, etc)
  • Experience with shaders, post-effects, visual scripting, VFX authoring, and graph based tool design
  • Broad experience in 2D & 3D asset creation pipelines that takes into account the strengths & weaknesses of mobile hardware (CPU & GPU), going from DCC to engine (modeling, vertex colors, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, integration, profiling and optimizations)

You might also have

  • Experience with AI/Machine learning and its usage in content generation and asset placement
  • A drive to stay up to date with DCC pipeline evolution trends and solutions
  • Gameplay programming experience (visual scripting and/or C#)
