We seek a GPU rendering expert to evolve our inhouse pre-visualisation rendering engine, an essential part in the creative process of the production pipeline for lighting, virtual production, scene layout, and motion at Wētā FX.
Your innovative contributions will provide significant advancements in movie quality rendering and creative interactive workflows, especially for fast high-quality lighting and materials. Your expert judgement will contribute to growing our team and reaching new goals, while your impactful work may be recognised in the movie industry as well as the research domain, directly shaping the future of the industry and unlocking new possibilities and applications.
What you’ll be doing
Tackle major unsolved challenges, driving and championing major novel advancements to provide impactful technological innovation in interactive and real-time rendering.
Research and develop novel GPU rendering algorithms, such as light transport (path tracing with importance sampling), volume rendering, material modelling, subsurface scattering, efficient global illumination, etc.
Implement, test, and maintain core rendering components with a focus on visual quality, scalability, and robustness.
Mentor and develop other researchers within Unity, balancing direct contributions with advising.
Work proactively with other Rendering leaders, Head of Department, and other Principals to ensure projects are in alignment with the strategic goals of the technology stack.
What we’re looking for
A recognised industry expert in interactive or realtime rendering technology specifically for film production.
Deep understanding of the rendering research landscape as well as industry trends, with a proven track record of research publications and major technology development achievements.
Extensive expertise in hardware architectures, especially GPUs, performance analysis, and optimisation of highly parallel, scalable systems.
Ability to work well within a team of industry experts, collaborate actively with other groups, and actively understand user requirements.
Experience with realtime rendering APIs as OpenGL, Vulkan and OptiX.
Excellent software architecture design skills and knowledge of engineering best practices.
You might also have
Knowledge of shading languages (OSL, MDL, RSL)
Familiarity with Linux, and programming and profiling tools such as Valgrind, Vtune, Nsight, git.
