GAMEPLAY MECHANICS DESIGNER JOB DESCRIPTION

As a Game Mechanics Designer, you will be responsible for designing and creating gameplay features, systems and mechanics that support and align with the creative and holistic direction of the game. Systems such as gameplay rules, control systems, camera systems, combat systems, progression systems, weapon attributes, collision systems, vehicles, artificial intelligence behaviors, etc. You should be very open to collaborating with not just other designers, but every member of the dev team. We’re not necessarily looking for someone with lead experience but would have to have leadership potential. If you think this is you, then you should apply!

As a Game Mechanics Designer, you will:

  • Be the main person and point of contact for all things related to game mechanics, gameplay features, and gameplay system designs
  • Help build and lead the gameplay mechanics design team
  • Communicate design functionality and vision through presentations, prototyping, and design documentation
  • Collaborate with design leads to help realize and further develop the vision of the game
  • Collaborate with the leads of the different dev departments to integrate designs of features and mechanics
  • Take a holistic approach to design rules and experiences with input and consideration from a multi-faceted team of contributors, including Tech, UX, Art disciplines, etc.
  • Communicate the vision of the game to the game mechanics design team and be able to break down and translate that vision into tangible tasks on a regular basis
  • Exercise production skills to help set priorities and tasks for the gameplay mechanics design team and to deliver on those goals
  • Create and maintain design documentation that will serve as the guide to everyone throughout the entire dev team
  • Help develop in-game prototypes of gameplay systems and features and evaluate their performance
  • Adapt to technical and production constraints, and be willing to iterate on your designs as often as needed
  • Be an integral part of realizing solutions to fix bugs and problems within the implemented systems
  • Follow up on features pre and post launch to help improve, add, or remove components
  • Combine passion, skill and expertise to continually raise the design bar

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A college diploma in Game Design or equivalent
  • At least 5 years of experience in video game production or related experience
  • Experience with game engines - Unity and/or Unreal, and productivity software – Word, Excel, Photoshop
  • A passion for making and playing (a wide range of) video games
  • Extremely open to different and exciting design challenges
  • The ability and desire to work in an extremely creative and collaborative environment
  • Good communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to clearly explain your thought process through documentation or in-person presentations
  • Critical thinking, open-mindedness, resourcefulness, and flexibility
  • Experience designing gameplay features, mechanics and/or systems on at least two shipped titles
  • Organizational and project management skills with the ability to multi-task a plethora of priorities
  • Bonus Skills: Design team leadership, Gameplay scripting experience
