Supermassive Games are seeking a Narrative Designer to work on of our exciting projects!

As Narrative Designer, you will work initially with the Creative Director and then the Game Director, Writer, and wider team. The role will go on to ensure the experience at the heart of the story delivers the intended vision to the players through their gameplay.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Be a champion of our game’s narrative design.
  • Build narrative weight and drive into the game's central pillars. Delivering on these for players through character arcs, strong pacing, interesting locations, story progression, etc.
  • Ensure game’s direction delivers in regards of the actual character journeys. Confirming related game events, dialogue, progression arcs etc. are all aligned and delivering.
  • Guarantee the choices made in gameplay are meaningful and consequences are in line with set up expectations.
  • Help weight branching paths and choices with appropriate depth and strength of content.
  • Within the role you will be expected to become familiar with the titles wider design and production constraints and factors these into your deliveries.

Requirements

Skills and experience Required:

  • 3+ years' experience as a game writer/narrative designer in a AAA game studio.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication are required, along with a need to work well in a creative team environment.
  • Writing strengths in areas such as description, idea explanation and script writing will be in frequent use.
  • Experienced in writing within constraints, as may be found in games writing.
  • Ability to write swiftly and solidly, accurately estimate work timeframes, and deliver to agreed specs.
  • Able to identify and act on the correct narrative lessons from a multitude of possible feedback sources.
  • Building a positive movement towards supporting the game's narrative direction. Increasing levels of buy in by both actively listening and were possible presenting back an ever more honed and enjoyable experience.
  • Identify potential narrative design problems and present solutions or option on ways forward. Areas may include logic issues, foundational flaws, unintentional bias, areas of sensitivity.
  • Strong presentational and relationship skills across game disciplines and seniority levels.
  • Meticulous attention to detail

Technical Skills/Knowledge:

  • Wide communication toolset to help present ideas in forms accessible for intended audience e.g., presentations, flow charts, sample scripts, character profiles etc.
  • Experience with Final Draft or similar screenwriting software.
  • Ability to prepare and potentially present narrative elements to executive levels and external parties.

The following would be an advantage:

  • Unreal engine experience
  • Experience of writing for nonlinear delivery
  • Familiarity working with a task tracking tool such as Jira
  • Film making
  • Video editing
