The role @ Sumo Newcastle

Sumo Newcastle are looking for a talented Senior Concept Artist to join the team to help define, maintain and drive the vision of current and future projects. You will be an integral part of the art team working alongside all disciplines to help steer and inspire with supporting concepts, paint overs and visual idea generation.

You will have a keen interest in all genres and an ability to readily generate and iterate on ideas whist incorporating any needs of the wider team. Working in a wide variety of styles you will work on a range of tasks from quick sketches to provide guidance all the way through to complete high quality rendered pieces. You will need to self-manage your work and time to ensure the support of the teams day to day needs balancing time available with required levels of detail needed on a task by task basis.

This position is open to remote, hybrid and in-studio working.

Within this role you will:

  • Help define and maintain the Art Direction for projects within the studio.
  • Create high-quality concepts making sure they follow and support any given art direction.
  • Provide fast concept feedback and iteration of ideas across all aspects of any given tasks.
  • Work directly with and actively seek feedback from the team to ensure any needs or dependencies are taken into account.
  • Maintain visibility of any concept work with any relevant stakeholders to ensure awareness of all the various stages.

We need you to have:

  • Shipped a minimum of one AAA game title.
  • Have at least 5 years of experience as a Concept Artist.
  • Excellent composition, lighting and colour theory skills and appreciation.
  • Good verbal, visual and written communication skills.
  • Experience with 3D packages.
  • Keen understanding of cultural influences beyond games; movies, books, TV, comics etc.

Portfolio guidance:

An eye-catching portfolio is required for this position. Please provide a link with your portfolio and take into consideration the key points we are looking for below:

  • Strong character, environment and object work.
  • The ability to work in multiple artistic styles.
  • High level of aesthetic ability, judgment and eye for detail.
