SMG Studio is looking for a talented art lead to join our team in Melbourne or Sydney (or remotely) and carry on with the great work established in Moving Out and across our other titles.

You will be helping shaping the future of the studio and leading the art team to success.

Note: This position is available to those working remotely with the understanding that you'll be working with a team in Melbourne's timezone.

What you will do:

  • Lead the concept and production of art for Moving Out and other SMG titles in the future
  • Produce high quality 2D, 3D and VFX assets in a variety of styles.
  • Produce good quality sketches to explain and sell game concepts.
  • Drive the creation of art and ensure that a unified vision is maintained.
  • Find artistic solutions which balance creative vision with production realities.
  • Review other artists’ work and give feedback to ensure highest quality output is met.
  • Collaborate with programmers to develop efficient and productive art pipelines.
  • Work with producers to ensure that realistic schedules are created and adhered to.
  • Be an active mentor and role model for the team.
  • Work to maintain morale and create an atmosphere of creativity and enthusiasm.
  • Keep informed about latest advances in game art techniques and technology.
  • Drive creation of presentation and marketing materials to communicate the artistic vision of our games.
  • Develop the skills of other team members and raise the quality bar within the studio.

Requirements:

  • Technical mindset with experience of implementing assets in Unity
  • Experience of working on a published game from conception to release.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Applicants should be able to communicate aesthetic/design/technical considerations effectively to a range of different stakeholders
  • Game design experience. Applicants will be responsible for developing the visual communicative component of designs - as such should have an appreciable understanding of design principles
  • Strong production experience. Applicants should be confident distilling long-term goals/direction into an actionable framework for execution
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills. Applicants should be experienced in working closely with others to deliver high-quality outcomes
  • Strong artistic sensibilities. Applicants should be experienced in managing the development and delivery of a wholistic aesthetic
  • Excellent understanding of Unity3D game engine environment
  • Proficiency with Git version control software. Applicants should be experienced in maintaining multiple development environments.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating a high level of artistic creativity in one or more game art disciplines across a range of styles.
  • Solid understanding of latest techniques in 3D modeling.
  • Good knowledge of latest 3D software, preferably Blender (or Max/Maya)
  • Proven ability to balance aesthetics with performance and usability.
  • Ability to present clear documentation communicating ideas both internally and externally.

This role can be conducted from home anywhere as we're now working from home on a larger scale than before. However you will be expected to have some crossover work hours (at least 3) with Melbourne, Australia's timezone to facilitate proper discussion.
