We are now looking for a Lead UX Designer to join Rovio’s Battle Studio in Helsinki Metropolitan Area, Finland. The whole team is located in Finland and works in a hybrid model, which allows them to work flexibly 1-3 days per week onsite with the whole team and chooses the working location within the country for the rest of the week, as long as the government pandemic restriction policy allows.

Responsibilities:

  • Actively contribute to our vision of re-inventing the strategy genre
  • Own our games’ UX in close collaboration with other Designers
  • Co-create the pacing and player journey of the game with Game Designers and System Designers
  • Support other Designers in strong social engagement and free-to- play monetization
  • Prototype concepts, gather internal and external player feedback and adjust as needed
  • Continuously benchmark the competition to identify best practices and emerging trends, and share those learnings with teams and studio

Who we think will do great in this role has:

  • Passion for strategy games, with a keen understanding of what makes these games work and monetize
  • Strong understanding of game design techniques and theory, including player needs and motivations, as well as clear views on social mobile gaming opportunities
  • Strong social game design skills and strong understanding the dynamics of competition and collaboration
  • Strong interest and belief in data-driven approach to support & validate intuition
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Skills and passion to lead the UX craft upon our vision, willingness to have an open mind and adapt and iterate designs, but also steer and make decisions when needed
  • Strong understanding of F2P business models and their trends in the gaming industry, a passion for developing innovative player journeys. We also appreciate experience in F2P mid-core or casual games, passion and skills to develop and take those categories to a new level
  • Understanding of balancing game systems
  • A few years of commercial experience in UX design, especially F2P game design

Recruitment process:

  • First meeting: You will meet the hiring manager. Before diving deeper into your skills, we want to know who you are and what motivates you. This is also an opportunity for you to learn more about Rovio and the specifics of the role.
  • Second round: We would like to do an exercise based on the real situation which takes about 2-3 hours and you can complete in your own time. This is to give you some context of what we are looking for.
  • Final round: You will be invited to meet the VP Game Development and one of the designers. Our aim is to get a clear overview of your skills, how you would fit with our working culture, your ambitions and where we can help you develop.

Rovio’s Battle Studio focuses on creating new casual strategy games. Our goal is to capture the essence of strategy games in an elegant and approachable format, and to make approachable games that have a wide appeal but a focused and deep end game. We are currently working on several prototypes, and we are now looking for new teammates who enjoy the thrill of cracking the difficult problems in order to create something truly new. Creating innovative games is a big challenge, but our teams are up to the task. Established in 2016, the Battle Studio has a flat hierarchy, a high level of transparency, and open communication.
