Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora™ is a first-person, action-adventure game developed by Massive Entertainment – a Ubisoft studio in collaboration with Lightstorm Entertainment and Disney. Built using the latest iteration of the Snowdrop engine and developed exclusively for the new generation of consoles and PC, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora brings to life the alluring world of Pandora with all of its beauty and danger in an immersive, open-world experience.

As a Technical Game Designer at Massive you'll be a part of our Gameplay team, enhancing the combat experience on Pandora. You’ll get the chance to create and implement; player respawn logic, NPC spawning/reinforcement logic, and combat area alert systems (to name a few).

To do this you’ll be supported by a Lead Designer, and collaborate with a Senior Technical Designer, our larger AI Game Design team, Coders, and other relevant stakeholders across our production team. Ultimately, your challenge will be to drive and set the quality bar for combat interactions across key locations on Pandora, via node-based scripting in our Snowdrop Engine.

This is a permanent position based in Malmö Sweden and requires working onsite. We kindly ask you to apply with your CV and message to the hiring manager in English. Applications will be reviewed whilst the job ad is posted.

Responsibilities:

  • Driving combat logic development, by working in close collaboration with AI design, code and other disciplines;
  • Using our proprietary node based scripting language to design and script gameplay systems;
  • Obtain in-depth knowledge of the engine, its capabilities, and auxiliary development tools;
  • Providing insightful feedback in design discussions with an emphasis on the realities of our engine, system constraints and how they will impact development;
  • Maintain a clear understanding of design direction so that systems can be implemented to spec and design intentions can be communicated clearly to other disciplines;
  • Provide constructive, critical feedback for designers creating level layouts and placing gameplay elements so they can properly scope their work and achieve the highest quality within the time constraints;
  • Work with Technical Directors, engine team, and production to improve tools, methods and task management;
  • Debugging and implementing reliable solutions to issues.

Qualifications

You are a bridge between code and design, able to digest the complexity of both disciplines and share that knowledge with your peers. You’re empathic and a great communicator in English (our company language), which allows you to connect with others and negotiate appropriate design changes. You’re also an autonomous and proactive problem solver, eager to master our engine and be one of the go-to designers for technical solutions.

Besides the above we’re looking for someone aligned with our core values and the following skills and experience:

  • Proven experience as a Technical Designer, Game Designer, Gameplay Programmer, or other relevant position on at least one major AAA title;
  • Experience working in game dev through several full production cycles;
  • Experience with 3D engines & visual scripting software (such as Blueprint, Kismet, etc.);
  • A relevant degree in design, programming, a relevant field, or the equivalent work experience;
  • Knowledge of game mechanics and design theory.
