The Company

Lightning Rod Games is a diverse team of experienced game developers with varied backgrounds at companies like EA, Disney, Ubisoft, and UserJoy. Most recently, we created A Fold Apart – a one-of-a-kind puzzle game about a long distance relationship in a world of folding paper. Innovation is at the heart of everything we do and our future titles will continue to break new ground.

The Role

You will be assuming a senior technical role within the team alongside our co-founder and a third intermediate-level programmer. We need someone with a breadth of experience to help with the breadth of technical challenges we face. These include, but are not limited to, process/pipeline development, middleware evaluation/integration, platform-specific development, gameplay programming, tools development, server programming, optimization, debugging, and a general willingness to apply yourself to new problems with no known solutions.

Our goal is to empower creativity, streamline processes, create new processes and techniques, and provide a solid foundation for creating unique player experiences. We strive for continuous improvement in a small-team environment where you don’t need permission to take responsibility. This means actively seeking out feedback to improve team function and being involved in the decision making that guides our development.

As a team, we’ve found success in our adaptability. When Apple Arcade presented an opportunity, we were able to pivot A Fold Apart from being a PC/console exclusive to being a fully featured and performant mobile game. This involved the whole team getting out of their comfort zone, learning new skills, and working collaboratively to achieve a goal. The games landscape is constantly changing and an eagerness to learn new skills is a necessity.

The Benefits

This is a paid full-time position with a competitive salary, medical, dental, and vision benefits. We keep flexible hours (core hours are 11:00am to 4:00pm ET) and work from home. This has proven to be ideal for people with families and young children. Every Friday at 4:00 is game night where we play games to chat and relax (don’t worry, we don’t care if you’re good at the games, just as long as you have fun). We also like to socialize in person (when it is safe to do so again). Our last outing was to an escape room followed by a team dinner. The best part of working at Lighting Rod is the team: people are friendly, humble, and eager to share and learn from each other.

People of all gender identities, races, religions, and ethnicities are encouraged to apply. Part of our commitment to a diverse and inclusive workplace is how we conduct our interviews. The technical portion is take-home and evaluations are anonymized. It allows you to relax and take your time. It also reduces the potential for unconscious bias on our end.

We’re looking for someone to become a core member of our team. Strong preference will be given to those residing in Ontario. You must be a Canadian resident to apply.
