Overview

Jagex Ltd, the UK's largest developer and publisher of online games, is looking for a talented Principal QA Engineer to join our Quality Assurance Department.The Principal QA Engineer drives the execution of the QA plan. They work closely with the QA Manager to formulate the best QA approach, provide hands-on technical and practical QA know-how, and advise the QA Manager so they can make decisions. On the same responsibility level as QA Lead.

Reports to the QA Manager.

Key Duties:

  • Drive team use of appropriate QA methods and approaches in testing, using knowledge and expertise to demonstrate their efficacy.
  • Understands short-term and long-term product plans and considers necessary support that may be required in advance.
  • Contributes to planning across the QA project and able to organise the team in the QA Manager’s absence.
  • Craft, research or utilize existing tools to improve and measure QA efficiency, make the team better over time.
  • Creates test cases to support features being worked on, able to advise on test case creation across all the project’s features, drives an effective test case review system.
  • Support coordinating and disseminating daily testing tasks to the offsite team and provide updates on testing progress.
  • Will lead areas of quality and/ or processes such as Live QA, onboarding and playtests.
  • Deliver technical, quantitative and qualitative feedback on assigned features to the development team, be the voice of quality for the product.
  • Provide data-driven, qualitative reporting on features, test progress and team development.
  • Documents projects and features, reviews existing documentation, drive documentation standards.
  • Takes ownership of the bug database, considers severity vs priority and push for the right issues to be fixed before release.
  • Understands user expectations and priorities, uses player knowledge to identify important usability issues to fix or improve. Considers long-term quality and health of the game and discovers and champions issues which affect it.
  • Works to put in place process improvements in concert with other QA Analysts.
  • Member of the QA best practises group that creates standards and policies for the wider team.
  • Become the Subject Matter Expert for multiple areas of testing. Seen as a point of contact for testing excellence across the team.

Essential Skills:

  • Deep understanding of software development processes.
  • JIRA JQL experience. Ability to create and reuse advanced lookups.
  • Able to adapt testing in an Agile environment, especially the nuances of video game development.
  • Can connect with and understand our players and translate expectation and sentiment into concrete issues that can be discussed and fixed.
  • Develop and build strong working relationships with development teams and execute a development QA support strategy during development.
  • Understands concepts of defect prevention and defect containment.
  • Can deploy coaching and mentoring techniques to help junior and established members of the QA team alike. Can support even those with greater subject matter expertise when necessary.
  • Able to collect and transcribe defect data which can be used to generate risk reports.
  • Can build close links across a team and help engage everyone in working towards common goals.
  • Able to create training programs to spread test excellence across all Jagex test teams.
  • Capable of translating complex requirements in an easy to understand manner for other Analysts.
  • Strong working experience and collaboration with external and internal teams.

Desirable Skills:

  • Line management of individuals, including setting and tracking goals.
  • Has been a QA Lead in a previous role.
  • Strong knowledge of data analysis tools such as SQL and Power BI.
  • Knowledge of products and technologies on the mobile market.
  • You have previous test experience on MMO’s, sandbox or ARPGs.
