Job Purpose:

As a principal engineer, your primary focus will be to ensure the technical strategy for the architecture and design of the corporate IT systems support team aligns with business and departmental strategies.

The Corporate IT Systems team is responsible for supporting, maintaining, and advancing the Jagex corporate IT infrastructure. You will play a key role working closely with Product and IT Management by providing technical direction to engineers and working with in-house domain experts to provide technical recommendations to product owners.

You will also be accountable for delivering on that strategy, by driving the development and adoption of technical principles, standards, and procedures across the IT engineering community.

Through collaboration you will build a good understanding of the problem spaces that Corporate IT Engineers at Jagex operate in and will use that understanding to develop technical principles that are meaningful and useful.

You will engage with IT Management and business stakeholders in the development and implementation of new business initiatives and projects by receiving business problems and requests and translating these into solutions.

Your goal is not only delivering on corporate IT System strategy, but also to enable and inspire other IT engineers and Technicians to resolve complicated issues and requests effectively; by coaching, mentoring, and driving improvement and adoption of all IT support and troubleshooting procedures.

As part of your role will also have the responsibility for creating, defining, and maintaining the standards from which Corporate IT Services are built upon and adhered to by the other IT teams.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Proven commercial experience in a similar role.
  • Provide a technical vision to engineers and product owners to better inform implementation decisions which will help define the strategic direction of the IT corporate services team.
  • Work with engineers and domain experts to continually improve and adapt the technical vision to meet the changing environment and IT landscape.
  • Provide, when asked an impartial fact-based view of implementation decisions to product owners, based on domain expert advice, industry best practice and a view to overall architecture.
  • Encourage the sharing and dissemination of information from domain experts to engineers with a practical interest.
  • Network and communicate with senior stakeholders across organisations and proactively seek out opportunities for digital transformation.
  • Support multiple teams, finding and using best practice and emerging technologies.
  • Build and maintain systems both on prem and in the cloud.
  • Work with developers to design, and implement, infrastructure according to in-house standards and industry best practices.
  • Develop and document in-house standards, procedures, and best practices.
  • Support other members of the Corp IT team with the implementation of standards.
  • Support other members of the Corp IT team to develop their expertise.
  • Corp IT server installation, configuration, and maintenance
  • Installation and upkeep of all physical data centre premises
  • Network & Database Administration and Troubleshooting
  • Support of the Jagex Corporate IT Team (AD, Azure, VDI, App Servers, Virtualization, Security Services, Build and Deployment Services etc.)
  • By identifying and taking ownership of support requests and escalations, including requests that are outside of existing process.
  • By identifying and taking ownership of incidents, including complex incidents that are beyond conventional troubleshooting processes.
  • By performing installations, repairs, maintenance, diagnosis & analysis of corporate IT systems related issues or requests, liaising with other IT/non-IT support teams across Jagex, or third-party support/equipment vendors, where appropriate.
  • By recommending & implementing corrective solutions whilst communicating best practice concerning the use of IT systems to the business.
  • By taking responsibility for the accuracy, integrity & relevance of data that populates the IT management systems.
  • Support in the professional development by using your own experience and expertise to help junior members of the IT Dept learn, develop, and grow.
  • By taking responsibility for identifying and implementing improvements to enhance existing processes and levels of support services.
  • By improving the team’s troubleshooting processes to cover more complicated incidents.
  • By achieving service level targets established through objectives & ensuring the highest level of customer & technical support services.
  • By drafting new support procedures and configuration standards to meet new requests and driving the adoption of these procedures throughout the IT Dept.

Skills & Experience:

  • A customer service focus, with an excellent ability to handle customers effectively; with a qualification or work experience in a customer-facing environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a focus on listening, questioning & team working skills.
  • Ability to present ideas & troubleshooting procedures in business-friendly & user-friendly language.
  • Proven analytical & problem-solving abilities, combined with excellent attention to detail.
  • Have excellent organisational & prioritisation skills, ability to complete multiple projects in a timely manner & can work efficiently under pressure.
  • The candidate is expected to be proficient and experienced to a very high standard in the design, implementation, configuration, and on-going support of the following technical disciplines:
  • Microsoft Server Operating Systems Including
  • Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy
  • Azure AD
  • ADFS
  • Microsoft SCCM
  • Patch and release management for all software / OSs. (Microsoft, Mac and third-party applications)
  • Office 365 & Exchange Hybrid Deployments
  • Virtualisation Infrastructure - VMWare vSphere, Hyper-V
  • Storage Area Networks (NAS, SAN)
  • WAN Networking (e.g., BGP, MPLS, OSPF)
  • LAN Networking (vLANs, Core Routing)
  • Information Security
  • Firewalls, preferably Palo Alto (vLANs)
  • VMware Horizon VDI
  • System Monitoring, preferably SCOM, ZABBIX
  • Scripting (Bash, PowerShell) any experience of automation tools a plus (Terraform, puppet, Ansible and IaC)
