Insomniac Games is searching for its next Senior Lighting Artist. They are responsible for lighting game levels and cinematic sequences using proprietary lighting tools which could include placing dynamic lights, atmospherics, and rendering physically based lighting data. Sr. Lighters set an example to the team by creating, implementing, and disseminating new lighting methods for improved performance and aesthetics within the game engine. They may also be assigned to help with preparation of game levels and sequences for demos and trailers.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities Include The Following

  • Lights real-time levels, cinematic sequences, and trailers
  • Sets up scene lights to consistently match color keys and concept art with an excellent understanding of project lighting style
  • Self-directed and able to work independently to maintain consistent excellent aesthetics and technical quality in all lighting tasks
  • Proposes new ideas and methods to improve workflow, performance, and technologies for lighting in the game engine
  • Troubleshoots large scale scene files and rendering issues
  • Troubleshoots materials for PBR compliance
  • Optimizes lighting data for memory and frame
  • Can diagnose and fix lighting issues and bugs
  • Installs complex scripted lighting sequences (e.g. reusable/large scale lighting rigs)
  • Creates and maintains probes for image-based lighting and reflections
  • Creates and maintains post FX (fog, color correction, etc.)
  • Works closely with other art departments to make sure assets are properly set up for lighting
  • Collaborates with designers to ensure that the correct areas are emphasized for gameplay with clear player paths
  • Works with Art Director and Lead Lighter to help further the lighting style of project
  • Helps tech artists and senior lighting staff to test and debug new lighting technology
  • Can help mentor new hires and other junior staff with lead and tech artist support
  • Other duties may be assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This role has no supervisory duties, however this role mentors more junior artists.

Education And/or Experience

  • Master's degree (M. A.) or equivalent; or five to seven years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong knowledge of modern lighting techniques in real-time computer graphics
  • Experience with source control with Perforce or the equivalent
  • Strong understanding of real-time shaders and how they relate to lighting
  • Solid understanding of scripting lighting interactions
  • Strong understanding of Maya and Photoshop

Other Skills

  • Strong understanding of lighting aesthetics, how lighting affects gameplay and guides the player, of real-time lighting and frame/ memory optimizations, how lighting affects physically based materials.
