id Software, part of the ZeniMax Media Inc. family of companies, is seeking an experienced Character Concept Artist to join our Dallas team in the development of an unannounced video game project.

Our team has created some of the most iconic creatures and characters in gaming – from the DOOM Slayer and Samuel Hayden, to the Cyberdemon, Arachnotron, Revenant and many more. Character Concept Artists are responsible for the visualization and conceptualization of AAA-quality characters and creatures. Reporting to the Concept Art Lead and working closely with Directors, Concept, animation and Character Art teams, this person will be tasked with sketching, ideating, refining and fully realizing characters and creatures to be utilized in both gameplay and cinematic context. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of art fundamentals as well as a technical proficiency in 2D visualization. Candidates must demonstrate strong visual design skills, as well as a strong understanding of human and creature anatomy. 3D proficiency optional.

Responsibilities

  • Create Character and Creature concepts at the direction of Directors and Concept Lead.
  • Work directly with Directors, Concept Lead and Character Art team in developing the visual look of the game.
  • Demonstrate ability to ideate, iterate, and refine visual design language.
  • Provide detailed callout concepts to assist 3d modelers, including turnarounds and orthographic images.
  • Collaborate closely with 3D modelers, animators and game designers.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed, including Environment and Prop concept creation as well as advertising and/or key-art creation.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of industry or related experience.
  • Proficient in concept and visual design.
  • Strong visualization and ideation skills required.
  • Ability to paint and/or model highly detailed characters and creatures.
  • Ability to iterate rapidly, providing a variety of ideation options for any subject.
  • Well versed in various art styles.
  • Ability to write and develop fiction around your own unique designs that inform the themes and story of the world.
  • Proficient in time management of multiple priorities and tasks within a set deadline.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong design skills required.
  • Resumes should include a link to your portfolio.

Preferred Skills

  • Significant contributions to at least 1 AAA shipped game.
  • Familiarity with id Software games, characters, brands and universes.
  • Ability to create environment and/or prop concept art.
  • Proficiency with 3D modelling tools (Blender, Maya, LightWave, Modo or other similar) or understanding of modeling process.
