Job Description
We are looking for a Technical Art Director to join our dynamic team and contribute to our innovative Dungeons & Dragons® PC/console project.
This groundbreaking game will merge action-RPG/survival elements with life-simulation features to redefine the genre and captivate players globally. As a Technical Art Director, you will work closely with art, technical and creative directors to bring our creative vision to life. You will oversee tech art pipelines and look development, while facilitating cross-team development and collaboration throughout all development phases.
This position can accommodate a hybrid work model, with the home studio located in Montreal, ǪC, Canada.
Main responsibilities:
Take ownership of art content pipelines and ensure their efficiency.
Oversee the world/biome generation pipeline, dynamic weather & time of day, character customization, and modular stronghold- and dungeon-building system.
Work with our Art team to maintain performance & memory budgets across all platforms.
Bridge between programmers and artists to ensure cross-disciplinary conversations.
Work with technical artists and 3D programmers to develop rendering features and shaders.
Develop and refine internal pipelines, identifying and resolving art workflow issues in collaboration with technical artists, engineers, and artists.
Evaluate, adopt, and mentor the team on innovative technologies and processes.
Define the technical roadmap and long-term vision for the tech art team, aligning with the needs of various disciplines.
Integrate and review technology (both internal and external) in art workflows, focusing on the most efficient and cost-effective solutions.
Cultivate a tech art department culture that values empowerment, self-accountability, and creative freedom.
Qualifications
At least 10 years of professional game development experience, including a minimum of 3 years in a lead or director position
In-depth knowledge of CG fundamentals such as modeling, texturing, shading, rigging, animation, lighting, and rendering
Expertise in modern art software packages and at least one in-depth (Max/Maya, Houdini, Substance 3D, ZBrush, etc.)
Experience with game engines such as Unreal, Unity, or modern proprietary engines
A keen eye for visual quality and strong aesthetic judgment
Proficiency in Python, PyQt, MAXscript or MEL for scripting in DCC applications, with C++/C# knowledge being a plus in engine
Solid understanding of 3D math and related concepts
Strong grasp of asset management and sharing best practices
Creative problem-solving skills to tackle technical challenges
Excellent communication abilities to bridge the gap between artists and software engineers
A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, graphic art, or a related field, or equivalent experience
Proven experience leading tech art for a AAA title
