Job Purpose
The News Writer is primarily responsible for writing multiple news articles per day on PCGamer.com. You'll make it a point of pride to uncover breaking stories before our competitors, and put the reader at the heart of your decision making—discovering the kinds of angles that resonate with our audience, and tailoring your output based on performance using analytics tools.
In addition to your news output, you may also be called on to write reviews, features, magazine articles, and other content under the guidance of senior editors as required.
You will be responsible for meeting all your deadlines and liaising with editors to ensure you produce high-quality content. You will always create copy with the readers' needs in mind, with the emphasis on clarity, insight, and accessibility.
You’ll have a passion for creating fast-moving news coverage and a good knowledge of the core issues surrounding PC gaming.
We'll help you understand the principles of SEO and how to use social media to make your work connect. You'll hone your writing and editing skills by working alongside an experienced global editorial team.
Strong communication skills are essential, as you'll be required to collaborate with the global team, liaise with industry contacts, develop sources and represent PC Gamer at industry events. You may also be asked to assist with the production of multimedia content, such as podcasts and videos.
The job requires strong attention to detail, organisational skills, a calm approach and self-discipline. In your time with PC Gamer you will cover the full spectrum of the hobby and have the chance to make your mark on a world-renowned media outlet.
Key responsibilities
- Write 3-5 relevant, accurate, well-written news stories per day
- Stay abreast of the news agenda for all aspects of the hobby
- Promoting news and features through PC Gamer's social media channels and optimising stories for SEO
- Peer editing the work of others and collaborating with other news editors
- Developing industry contacts that'll yield stories in the future
- Contributing to wider editorial output as needed
- Help on any of the creative output of the team, including podcast and video
- Find and write articles pertaining to your assigned beats, with a focus on finding angles and stories our competitors aren't covering
- Take responsibility for managing your own workload, liaising with editors to produce slot stories, features, reviews, news and magazine pages as needed
- Be a voice in planning meetings, helping to generate and refine feature ideas
- Be responsible for and deliver any administrative tasks set by senior staff
