Position Summary

ESL UK are the project lead, as part of a 6 business consortium, for an ambitious governmentally funded research & development project. The consortium has been awarded £4m in funding to create a technology framework for personalised AI powered immersive experiences for audiences in esports. The project started in March 2019 and this is a fantastic opportunity for an entrepreneurial hands on web/digital developer, with strategy foresight and team management skills, who can quickly build up an understanding of the Weavr vision, and work with the consortium member technical teams to deliver the remainder of the platform roadmap over the next 15 months.

You will be responsible for developing ESL UK’s components of the platform and responsible for overseeing the technical delivery of all platform, mobile app and virtual reality development across the project partners.

On a day to day basis you will also be working closely with the ESL UK CEO, COO, Weavr Lead Project Manager and other stakeholders in the ESL Group.

An ideal role for a natural self-starter who is probably a developer-at-heart and wants to join a project at an early stage, use their developer and planning skills immediately whilst building a team for 2020 to make a real difference in a short space of time. If you are also an eSports/traditional sports fan then this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

You will report directly to the Project Lead, as well as help to present information and updates to the ESL CEO & COO, both of whom will be spending time on the project.

There are likely to be opportunities to grow with the project as it transforms into a business post 2020.

This role can be homebased with weekly visits to the Leicester office and adhoc visits to the other consortium members located around the UK.

Key responsibilities

Q4 2019

  • Get up to speed with the Weavr vision, current version of app, VR experience, roadmap
  • Build relationships with the consortium member technical teams
  • Create and monitor against a technical development plan for the remainder of the project
  • Identify team requirements and recruit for start in Jan 2020 (budget for 5-7 people)
  • Identify and plan development/integration opportunities with ESL Group platforms
  • Start work on creating a user management module and Twitch overlay
  • Support the team at event in Hamburg at the end of October when demonstrating the next version
  • Keep the project team and steering committee updated on progress
  • Support the team with the development of the business plan
  • Identify team requirements and recruit for start in Jan 2020 (budget for circa 6 people)

2020

  • Bring team on-board and work together to deliver the ESL aspects of the technical plan
  • Coordinate and facilitate the technical development delivery across the other consortium members
  • Support the team demonstrating the product at two events (May and in Q3)
  • Day to day management of ESL UK development team
  • Support the team with the development of the business plan
  • Keep the project team and steering committee updated on progress

Key skills

  • A minimum of 5 years industry experience, and experience in software architecting
  • 5 years experience in leading projects, ideally in the context of interactive web services and applications
  • Experience leading large and complex web related development projects
  • C#, C++ and Python
  • Experience across front-end and back-end technologies
  • Experience in data analytics
  • Experience in networking and data streaming
  • Being part of delivering large multi-stakeholder projects
  • Knowledge and experience of a range of project management methodologies and frameworks, i.e. Agile/Scrum
  • Experience of working with a diverse range of project management software packages such as Hansoft, Jira, Open Project & MS Project
  • Recruitment and team management
  • Ability to work in a past paced environment with changing requirements

  • Keen gamer/eSports fan (nice to have)

Key Performance Indicators:

  • Complete development project milestones on time and to budget
  • Recruit and day to day management of the team
  • Play an active role in the strategic direction of the project as a steering committee member

Line Management responsibility:

  • Line Manager of 5-7 direct reports
