The primary objective for this role is to advance the positive image of the Canadian video game industry through media relationships, brand building activities and campaigns, events, as well as securing public speaking opportunities for the CEO.

The ESAC team is currently working from home due to the global pandemic and plans on going back into the office in when appropriate. In the meantime, you must be comfortable working in a virtual/remote environment.

*Fluency in English & French, both spoken and written, is a requirement for this position.

Reporting to the President & CEO, the Director, Communications & Public Relations will:

  • Work with the ESAC team and members to develop and implement a proactive and comprehensive media and public relations strategy to convey to government, consumers and the public the positive impacts of the video game industry;
  • Manage ESAC’s brand and all public relations activities;
  • Manage the development of speeches, presentations, media releases and other materials that allow ESAC to communicate its message;
  • Monitor media and key industry issues;
  • In collaboration with the Digital Content Manager, support ESAC’s online presence;
  • Work with the CEO and Digital Content Manager to establish processes, metrics and analytics to measure success for digital and social media activity;
  • Develop contacts and relationships with reporters and media professionals across the country and at key national outlets to keep informed, and identify new opportunities to promote the industry;
  • Facilitate speaking opportunities for the CEO that support ESAC’s strategic objectives, such as national speaking clubs, boards of trade, conferences, etc.;
  • Work with Director of Policy & Government Affairs to build compelling narratives for the industry that support strategic advocacy objectives, thought leadership and national campaigns;
  • Contribute to, and sometimes lead, events that ESAC produces, including the annual Video Games on the Hill showcase in Ottawa;
  • Contribute to, and sometimes lead, various research projects that the organization conducts and manage the process with the external consultants conducting the study;
  • Provide advice and support to the President & CEO on media and communications issues and when the CEO conducts media interviews;
  • Serve as industry spokesperson when the President & CEO is not available;
  • Participate in quarterly board of directors’ meetings by presenting updates on PR activities undertaken by the organization;
  • Occasional travel, both national and international, is required in this position (currently a remote workplace with restricted travel until COVID subsides);
  • Assume other responsibilities as required.

Skills and Attributes

  • 7+ years of progressive communications experience;
  • A university degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or equivalent;
  • Established network of media contacts and relationships, ideally in both Quebec and English Canada;
  • Background working in journalism or PR agency environment is a plus;
  • Significant knowledge and skills to develop and execute effective communications and engagement tactics across multiple channels and platforms (digital and traditional);
  • High quality writing and editing skills to plan, research and develop compelling content for a wide variety of purposes (speeches, articles, web, talking points, key messages, promotional materials targeted to various audiences);
  • Ability to take raw data and craft compelling narratives that can appeal to audiences with different lenses and priorities;
  • Excellent ability to work in a team environment along with the ability to work independently while part of a cohesive and small interdependent team;
  • Ability to put the team and members’ interests above individual achievements or credit;
  • Ability to interact and work interdependently while remote and not in a physical office;
  • Ability to multi-task and/or pivot from file to another as priorities shift;
  • Ability to work with broad array of stakeholders to build clear and impactful messaging;
  • Excellent customer service disposition with an acute understanding of the critical importance of delivering value for the membership;
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in the video game industry is an asset;
