Creative Assembly’s award-winning team behind Alien: Isolation are exploring new frontiers with a brand-new and exciting First-Person Shooter IP.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Lead Build Engineer to join our talented production team at our studio in Horsham, based in heart of Sussex, England.

The Build Operations team is a core part of the development cycle with many responsibilities, touching all areas of the game development. You will be crucial in enabling the development team to work without blockages and as efficiently as possible. So, to be successful in this role, you will be forward-thinking, proactive when working with teams, but comfortably autonomous in your problem-solving, decision making and confident in your communication.

Key Responsibilities

As the Lead Build Engineer for Build Operations, you will work closely with the Senior Lead Build Engineer for Tools & Infrastructure. You will collaborate together to get in place great processes and pipelines for the efficient production of builds. You will work with the production team and QA on highlighting issues. Everything you do is about producing good quality builds either for internal use or external release. You will also lead and develop your direct report with regular one to ones, training and day to day support. In this role, you will also be involved with recruitment and selection on the project where relevant.

You will be open, friendly, and approachable and be a nexus of information on the project. You will collaborate and communicate with developers across the team from all disciplines. In this position, you and the Build Engineers will be the key point of contact for assistance in various software and build related issues, build delivery timetables, and build requests.

You will utilize several technologies in the development of our build pipeline driven by Unreal and Perforce, including C/C++, C#, and our own internal frameworks. You will also be responsible for creating and managing work processes that improve build robustness and helping to foster an environment of responsible development.

On a day-to-day basis, you will:

  • Responsible for the continuous integration and deployment of the various builds and tools to the dev team and release team.
  • Ensure builds are delivered rapidly and robustly. Communicating issues with the dev and QA teams.
  • Take the lead in the development and improvement of the existing build / asset pipeline and CI systems
  • Create and manage work processes that improve build robustness and helping to foster an environment of responsible development
  • Anticipate change in development processes and ensure pipelines can scale with these, and identify solutions to ensure development teams remain operational
  • Drive an always-on mindset in all aspects of development
  • Be a key point of contact for assistance in various software and build related issues, build delivery timetables and build requests
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot build problems and advertise these to the teams
  • Document, track and communicate build status priority changes, communicate requirements clearly and ensure they are understood and actioned
  • Work with the various stakeholders to triage a build appropriately as it moves towards its release deadline. Discuss and escalate concerns. Ensure tech and decision pipelines are freed up or are made aware of bottlenecks ahead of time

Knowledge, Skill and Experience

Essential

  • Focused leader, with a proactive urgency to solving issues
  • Approachable, friendly, and confident in decision making who can communicate well with dev team at all levels.
  • Knowledge of version control software – e.g., Perforce or Git
  • Worked with and set up stream maps for complex codebases including a mix of mergeable and non-mergeable assets. Particularly UE4 projects
  • Administering CI systems such as Jenkins, Hudson or Teamcity
  • A solid technical foundation - e.g., Computer Science / Maths degree or equivalent
  • Forward thinker and problem-solver with the drive to seek out and acquire information
  • Detail oriented with very strong organisational skills

Desirable

  • Experience managing large volumes of requests and work priorities
  • At least one shipped title was a Live Operations service
  • Experience shipping games on consoles.
  • Experience with data handling tools – e.g., PowerBi or Kibana
  • Experience with post launch product support

Previous experience working in one or more of the following roles would be advantageous:

  • Deployment management
  • QA
