The Technical Art Director, reporting directly to the Managing Director, is a critical role at Build A Rocket Boy. As our Technical Art Director, you will be accountable for the technical art, performance, research, innovation, and technical quality of the game. You will provide technical support to the art team to guide and assist them in the best practices possible.

As someone with a strong understanding of visual quality and technology, you will ensure the art team is using the right tools in the right way to maximize the project's visual goals within the constraints of the game's scope and engine.

Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the technical performance of art in the game
  • Ensure consistency and uniformity of technical art quality throughout the game
  • Collaborate with Engineering Leadership, AD and Core Engine and Tools teams to make critical art pipeline and process decisions
  • Direct efforts of the Technical Art staff to identify and develop necessary art tool chains and documentation
  • Create, organize, and lead training sessions for Art Teams on tools, techniques, and best practices. Ensure follow through those best practices are being well used throughout the project.
  • Maintain clear lines of communication with each project's art, design, and engineering teams
  • Reinforce the technical constraints of the product, and reasoning, to the art team
  • Work with Production to ensure that timeframes and technical constraints are effectively determined or estimated to meet the project's requirements
  • Work with Production to ensure effective and efficient deployment of technical art staff across multiple projects
  • Work with the project Art Directors and Engineering Leadership to ensure technical art efforts meet visual goals, efficiency goals, and technical requirements
  • Provide mentorship to the technical art staff and facilitate training efforts to develop the technical art discipline within the studio
  • Validate tool requests from the Art Team together with CTO and Technical Directors.
  • Create and maintain documentation standards and practices for tools, pipelines, and technical specifications
  • Work closely with the Tools Team to maintain a manifest of tools
  • Maintain a holistic view of Tech Art across the studio, working with Production to reshape/redeploy depending on project needs

Requirements:

  • Experience as a Lead Technical Artist or TAD on AAA title
  • Trained eye and strong understanding of visual quality and fidelity
  • Expert in content creation applications and applying these within game editors and engine
  • Experience with asset optimization challenges/techniques
  • Ability to work with Tools and Rendering Software Engineers to guide technology and tool development
  • Familiarity with in-game User-Generated Content workflows and UX
  • Understanding of real-time game content and the requirements for these to be efficient and high-quality
  • Excellent communications skills to instruct, inform and guide the game team towards the set goals.
