Blizzard Entertainment is seeking a Technical Manager for our IT Infrastructure Engineering group in Irvine, CA. You will help build and support infrastructure which reliably stores and protects the data that powers all of Blizzard’s online games and their supporting systems.

IT Infrastructure Technical Managers create technology solutions that solve problems within their organization, across all of IT, as well as building to the needs of other stakeholders throughout the company. They are highly collaborative and are expected to spend much of their time aligning with peers within the organization, creating process, organizing team workflow efficiently, and reducing duplicated work within Blizzard as a whole. Infrastructure Engineering’s primary goal is to get out of the way of stakeholders and build easy to use and reliable systems that end users can always depend on being available and performant.

The Technical Manager guides their team of direct reports in daily tasks, as well as taking on lead in the architecture and development of new technologies within Blizzard’s infrastructure. They work closely with peer groups within IT, as well as stakeholders within the company to be sure that the solution designed meets the needs of the business.bThe Technical Manager is directly responsible for a team owning all types of storage, backups, and related processes at Blizzard, including traditional storage arrays, scale-out object and block storage, and backup storage systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of experienced engineers, provide leadership and vision on initiatives
  • Manage and Develop team members, partnering with them in creating meaningful career advancement opportunities
  • Take technical input from multiple sources and disciplines, and translate into a unified engineering solution
  • Our infrastructure is global and diverse – comfort working in a hybrid cloud environment (private + multiple public providers) is essential
  • Communicate the team’s projects and goals clearly within the team, and to IT leadership
  • Operate independently, with little day-to-day guidance from upper management
  • Champion best practices related to enterprise storage, backups, and general IT processes
  • Drive innovation and process improvement efforts
  • Create and maintain relationships with critical 3rd party vendors
  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues

Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of writing purchase justifications, training users in complex topics, making presentations to an internal audience
  • A strong understanding of Storage and SAN (FC and IP) concepts
  • A strong understanding of Backup and Recovery processes and technology
  • Extensive experience with Linux systems
  • Experience with storage arrays and vendors such as EMC (ex: PowerFlex, XtremIO), HP 3PAR, NetApp
  • Experience with backup appliances and software vendors (Data Domain, IBM TSM, NetBackup)
  • Experience with Object Storage (we use Swift in our private cloud)
  • Experience Investigating/researching new technologies, including software and hardware, based on business requirements.
  • Ten + years of storage and backup administration, design, and/or engineering experience

Desirable Background and Skills

  • A degree in computer science or a related field or equivalent experience
  • Significant programming background in an administrative language (ex: Python)
  • Experience building block storage platforms supporting private cloud (Openstack, VMware, etc)
  • Experience with object stores and object store interfaces at scale (Swift, GCS, S3)
  • Experience supporting Cassandra, MySQL, Oracle, and other data storage technologies from a storage and backups standpoint
