At Blizzard Entertainment, our Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) use systems expertise combined with software engineering patterns to help define, create, and support the architecture, build systems, orchestration, and operations of services across the business. Our Team Leads are uniquely placed in order to directly focus and optimize the efforts of highly skilled SREs in key areas to maximize the effectiveness of a fairly small team. This role depends heavily on technical knowledge, the ability to foster and maintain relationships with our partner development teams, and developing our SREs of all levels.

Blizzard's games and platforms reach a global audience of passionate gamers. The scale is massive and the challenges are very real, but the wise application of technology is the answer to keep it all running reliably with minimal guidance. Our Site Reliability Engineers are at the heart of this work, working directly with the engineering teams from ideation to release, in order to deliver the most epic (and reliable!) experiences... ever.

As a Lead on the SRE team at Blizzard, you may find yourself…

  • Leveraging your technical experience to coordinate and maximize impact across several groups of SREs while minimizing duplicated efforts

  • Evaluating the technical challenges of our partner teams and applying your experience to help lead the assembled team(s) to provide strong value-driven solutions.

  • Mentoring, developing, and inspiring, as well as learning from, the SREs that report to you

  • Identifying areas of stagnation or inefficiency within our game teams and partnering with stakeholders to make the necessary changes to fulfill the SRE vision

  • Continuously working with SRE leadership, as well as the business as a whole, to make our team a top-tier destination for the most talented engineers in the industry

  • Sharing ideas and technology to partner teams throughout Blizzard in a clear and effective way

  • Working with stakeholders to drive a blameless culture around incident management

You may succeed in this role if you…

  • Love to solve novel and exciting problems

  • Thrive on making big-picture impact and continuously looking for disruptive positive change

  • Are inspired to make everyone's job easier by improving workflows

  • Take pride in your team and succeeding through others

  • Are driven to nurture and develop highly effective engineers

  • Strive to be better, smarter, and faster tomorrow than you are today

  • Enjoy trying new technologies to improve what we're doing today

  • Possess the technical knowledge to understand the challenges facing the team

  • Naturally spread the philosophies and practices of SRE to others

  • Like to collaborate with others to solve problems, share knowledge, and provide feedback

  • Can self-assess the needs of a system or team, and make a case to prioritize that work

  • Know when and how to say “No”

SREs at Blizzard are expected to become experts in the technologies used by the teams they are working with. Below is a non-exhaustive list of technologies SREs, and the Leads by extension, may be exposed to:

  • Service-Level Objectives (SLI, SLO, SLA, Error Budget, Burn Rate)

  • Distributed Systems (HA/FT, microservices)

  • IaaC and Config Management (Puppet, Terraform, Ansible)

  • Container Computing (Kubernetes, Service Mesh)

  • Cloud Services and Architecture (AWS, GCP, OpenStack)
