Blizzard is investing in increasing the quality of our products and development processes through engineering. We are looking for an Assistant Director of Engineering to scale and level up these efforts. In this role you will work side by side with the Director of Engineering to help grow our engineering teams and shape the future of our technical direction.

Covid-19 Hiring Update: We have transitioned to a work-from-home model and we are continuing to interview and hire during this time. This role is expected to begin as a remote position. We understand each person’s circumstances may be unique and will work with you to explore possible interim options.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with QA department leadership to develop, refine and evangelize department’s technical vision
  • Partner with several Blizzard development teams to help establish and improve testability engineering strategy
  • Hire, evaluate, and grow software engineering leaders and teams
  • Positively contribute to a diverse and inclusive environment of continuous improvement and enable people to do their best work
  • Own and drive cross-team initiatives and research projects to advance theory and practice of applying software engineering towards quality assurance
  • Accountable for technical quality of solutions within their area of responsibility
  • Act as a technical stakeholder to shared service and technology providers
  • Participate in company-wide technical leadership initiatives and serve as an active partner in driving the company’s technological vision
  • Participate in QA department management processes and present formal business reviews regularly

Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 years' experience in software engineering including a minimum of 3 years’ experience in test automation
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in a technical leadership position developing and operating multi-user online services
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience managing individual engineers and engineering leads
  • A strong leader, mentor, and coach, excellent collaborator, facilitator, and influencer
  • Proficient in both written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical developers and at all levels from individual engineers to executive level
  • Strong ability to partner with technical and non-technical leaders from the larger development organization
  • Flexible and pragmatic software architect with an ability to build solutions from scratch or within an existing codebase and development process
  • Proficiency with at least one and familiarity with multiple widely used programming languages
  • Expert in application of multiple test automation approaches (functional/non-functional, UI/API/Unit, etc.) in a CI/CD development environment
  • Good understanding of modern Software Development Lifecycle methodologies, software testing strategies, DevOps practices and software quality metrics

Pluses

  • ISTQB or CSTE certification or equivalent
  • Experience working in game development or familiarity with modern off-shelf game development engines
  • Experience with data analysis, visualization, and machine learning applications
  • A passion for Blizzard products
