Esports Head Coach - Athletics

Ashland University is an NCAA Division II institution that competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Beginning in 2021-22, the university will move to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC). Ashland University offers a comprehensive 24-sport athletic program. The university is located off of Interstate 71 in Ashland, Ohio, midway between Cleveland and Columbus.

Position Summary:

Ashland University is seeking applications for the position of Esports Head Coach. The Head Coach is responsible for the entire operation of the Esports program. This is a full-time, 12 month position reporting to the Director of Athletics.

Essential Position Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for contest scheduling, practice and contest planning, player skill development and coordination of all events concerning the Esports program.
  • Responsible for the general oversight of the Esports facility. This position will be responsible for maintaining and monitoring all Esports equipment and facilities.
  • Have a thorough understanding of Esports and trends in the gaming industry. Should have familiarity with several types of games and be able to instruct student-athletes in playing and game preparation. It is imperative that the head coach research and stay current on cutting edge equipment and playing techniques for a wide variety of Esports games.
  • Work one-on-one with student-athletes and also be required to instruct student-athletes in small group settings.
  • Will serve as the face of the program. This includes helping to promote and build the program. The head coach will work with groups on and off campus to expand the visibility of Ashland University Esports.
  • Requires the ability to recruit potential student-athletes. The head coach is responsible for meeting all Ashland University roster requirements.
  • Will oversee any part-time or volunteer coaches and provide annual evaluations for all Esports staff.
  • Should be well versed and able to instruct student-athletes on physical health, team concepts and team building exercises, team development techniques and safety.
  • Thorough understanding of NCAA and GLIAC/GMAC rules and regulations is required. The head coach must adhere to these rules and ensure that the program is in compliance with all rules, regulations and guidelines. The ability to articulate these to student-athletes is also required.
  • Understanding of Ashland University's mission and goals is required. Applicants must have the ability to explain these to student-athletes.
  • Responsible for monitoring the Esports budget. All plans for travel and equipment purchase also fall under the responsibility of the head coach.
  • Monitors academic progress of all student-athletes on the team and working with various constituencies across campus to ensure that student-athletes receive the proper academic counseling and assistance.
  • This position could require other assignments as assigned by the athletic director. These could include fundraising, game management, and working with other athletic department personnel at selected events.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree is required and/or coaching/playing experience at an elite level of competition is desired. Previous Esports coaching in higher education or similar program development is preferred.
  • Strong technology skills are required. This includes familiarity with software and hardware equipment associated with Esports and the ability to stay up-to-date on cutting edge trends in Esports.
  • The ability to identify and recruit student-athletes is required.
  • This position requires well-developed communication skills, as well as strong time management and organizational skills.
  • The ability to manage a budget is desired.
  • The ability to work weekends and evenings is required. This position requires travel (some overnight), both in recruiting and attending competitions. Non-traditional work hours will also be required.
