Amazon Game Studios is seeking a Gameplay Engineer to join our team in sunny Irvine, CA. This position will work with Design to build a flexible encounter and game rules framework for The Lord of the Rings.

We're aspiring to create a game with "perpetual progression" where every play session feels fresh. We need an engineer who can extend our core combat fun with procedural content and flexible game modes.

In this role you will create a Gameplay framework that supports both hand-crafted stories and procedural combat activities. You will give activity designers and world builders the tools to define, combine and re-use templatized assets and game rules on the fly. You'll integrate with matchmaking services as well as develop asynchronous modes that let players contribute on their own schedule.

What You'll Do

  • Build a combinatoric and procedural activity framework for The Lord of the Rings
  • Build workflows that let our activities designers and world builders be insanely creative
  • Integrate and extend backend services such as matchmaking, social systems, and asynchronous gameplay
  • Enable product managers to monitor and tune modes and rules on the fly
  • Set the standard with your individual skill, then as the project advances guide others to create high quality work.

Basic Qualifications

  • A passion for video games
  • 5+ years of experience in the games industry as an engineer, or equivalent work in a related field
  • 2+ shipped AAA game titles or equivalent work e.g. live product development
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ shipped AAA game titles or equivalent work e.g. live product development
  • Familiarity with Amazon GameLift and Twitch APIs, or equivalent.
  • Experience with procedural content creation
  • Strong communication skills across different teams and technical backgrounds
  • Meets/exceeds Amazon’s leadership principles requirements for this role.
  • Meets/exceeds Amazon’s functional/technical depth and complexity for this role.
