Amazon Game Studios is seeking a Gameplay Designer to join our team in sunny Irvine, CA. This position will work with the Creative Director to design gameplay activities for The Lord of the Rings that can sustain players for years.

We're aspiring to create a game with "perpetual progression" where every play session feels fresh. We need a designer ready to embrace both hand-crafted gameplay and also procedural, combinatoric fun.

In this role you will work with our Gameplay team to deliver both hand-crafted missions and procedural combat activities. You'll work with narrative designers to tell stories set in Middle-earth; with product managers to add seasonal game modes and events; and with world artists and engineers to create a palette of re-usable gameplay elements for endless fun. You’ll also pioneer asynchronous modes that let players contribute to social goals on their own schedule. This will be a role that never stands still.

  • An early member of Gameplay team, reporting to the Creative Director
  • An owner of Gameplay designs built by artists and engineers

What You'll Do

  • Work with the Creative Director to design gameplay activities that can sustain players for years
  • Build hand-crafted story missions inside The Lord of the Rings
  • Work with engineers, world builders and other designers to create repeatable procedural content
  • Design, implement and tune combat encounters and game modes
  • Design and build challenging matchmade synchronous modes
  • Design and build asynchronous social modes that support mass social play
  • Work with Product Managers to monitor player reaction and experiment with new modes
  • Set the standard with your individual skill, then as the project advances guide others to create high quality work.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in the games industry as a game designer, or equivalent work in a related field
  • 2+ shipped AAA game titles or equivalent work e.g. live product development
  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • A passion for video games
  • Expert knowledge of at least one Game Engine (Unity, CryEngine, Unreal, or equivalent)
  • Experience with procedural content creation
  • Meets/exceeds Amazon’s leadership principles requirements for this role.
  • Meets/exceeds Amazon’s functional/technical depth and complexity for this role.
