Come make games at Aardman! We’ve assembled a world-class team to build visually unique games for PC and console. Our focus is inventive mechanics and compelling characters imbued with the humour, love and craftsmanship you’d expect from Aardman.

We’re working on an incredible, brand-new IP with a major publisher and we’re looking for like-minded people who want to help make a game that only Aardman could make. People who are excited about having ownership and creative influence, who value transparency, and who want to build games that will be remembered.

We are in a unique position as a new games studio within an Oscar winning creative company. We’re employee owned, independent, and we live by our values: creative integrity, creative excellence, humour, openness, and collaboration.

The Role:

We’re looking for a Level/Narrative designer to help us build a mad, open world and fill it with compelling stories.

You’ll join at the beginning of pre-production, and work with the design team to analyse the prototype we’ve created and work out how to flesh it out into a full game. We’ll be scoping out the size and structure of our world, the player journey from end to end and the way we implement and explore our core, open-ended mechanics. As a title pushes into new design space within the 3D action-adventure genre, your ability to plan and document clearly will be crucial.

At the same time we’ll be delving into our story and working out how we can tell it in the most compelling and immersive way possible, using a range of narrative tools. You’ll own the narrative design documentation and ensure that it’s clearly communicated across the team.

As we move into production you’ll be the link between design and narrative. You’ll create and own parts of the world from a level design perspective, but you’ll also take a major role in narrative across the game and work with the other designers to make sure we tell a cohesive and compelling story from the first moment. You’ll also work with the writers, feeding back ideas and issues as they emerge during implementation.

As a role, this is a perfect fit for a multi-disciplinary designer who enjoys collaborating with multiple teams and championing a significant element of the title.

Required Skills and Experience:

People have all sorts of different skills and life experiences. If you think you’d be great in this role, but don’t quite fit some of what’s below: get in touch, and let’s talk.

  • Experience as a level designer or narrative designer on at least one game in a relevant genre
  • Experience with Unreal, Unity, or another widely used engine
  • Strong understanding of narrative fundamentals and techniques
  • The ability to create clear, accessible design documentation
  • The ability to whitebox and iterate spaces quickly and to a high standard
  • The ability to work creatively and compassionately with disciplines across the studio
  • A strong grasp of visual communication and UX

Desirable Skills:

  • Expertise with the Unreal engine and Blueprints
  • Experience working on a 3D action adventure title
  • Experience working with narrative design software
  • Experience with the Unreal Gameplay Ability System
  • Experience working on games with systemic mechanics
  • Experience with narrative and storytelling in games

Closing date for applications: 5pm on Monday 31st January 2022
